Chapter 16 - The Ashes of the Old Guard

The silence in the top-floor executive boardroom of Villaseñor Group was heavy enough to crush glass.
Twenty-two directors sat frozen in their leather chairs, staring down at their tablets as if the glowing screens might rewrite themselves. The illusion of Elena Villaseñor’s untouchable matriarchal power had shattered in less than sixty seconds.
Elena remained seated at the head of the long mahogany table, her knuckles pressed so hard against the polished wood that her skin had turned chalk-white. The razor-sharp chignon that had defined her aristocratic authority for decades suddenly looked fragile, like a crown of dry twigs.
“You can’t do this, Diego,” Elena whispered, her voice cracking for the first time in public memory. “The founding partners... your grandfather built this company on trust and bloodline alliance. You are throwing away forty years of heritage for a—for a servant!”
Diego, who had already turned toward the double doors, stopped. He did not look back. His tall, commanding frame stood framed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Santa Fe, the gray morning clouds reflecting off his sharp charcoal blazer.
“My grandfather built this company on strength, Mother, not stagnation,” Diego said, his voice cold, level, and entirely devoid of mercy. “You spent decades treating human lives like collateral in a corporate ledger. You tried to erase my daughter before she took her first breath. You declared war on my family.”
He turned his head slightly, his grey eyes cutting through the distance.

“The war is over. Consider this your final warning: stay out of our lives, stay away from my daughter, and enjoy your retirement. Because if you cross me again, I won't just strip your advisory seat—I’ll erase your name from the corporate charter entirely.”
Without waiting for an answer, Diego pushed open the heavy oak doors and strode out of the boardroom, leaving the architects of the old guard sitting amidst the smoking ruins of their conspiracy.
