Chapter 10 - The Last Button in Las LomasThe media storm outside the iron gates of Las Lomas took nearly a week to fully dissipate, but inside the Villaseñor mansion, the air had never felt lighter.

It was a quiet Sunday afternoon.
The sprawling gardens were bathed in golden autumn sunlight. On the manicured green lawn near the fountains, little Valentina was running back and forth, laughing as she chased a butterfly, her small duck-pattern socks pattering against the grass.
Marisol sat on a shaded wrought-iron patio bench, watching her daughter, holding a cup of warm tea.
Footsteps approached softly from behind. Strong, familiar arms wrapped around her shoulders, pulling her back against a solid, comforting chest as Diego sat down beside her on the bench.
“Penny for your thoughts, Marisol,” Diego murmured, resting his chin gently on her shoulder.
Marisol smiled, leaning her head back against his chest. She opened her left palm, revealing a small, shiny object resting in her skin—the heavy golden button Valentina had found in the hallway just a few days ago.
“I was just thinking,” Marisol whispered, “about how fragile everything is. One little button... dropped by accident on a marble floor... and our entire world changed.”
Diego reached out, gently closing his fingers over hers, trapping the button between their palms.
“It wasn't an accident,” Diego corrected softly, his voice rich with quiet conviction. “It was a homecoming.”
Out on the lawn, Valentina stopped running, turned around, and looked straight at them. She held up her own worn-out stuffed rabbit with one hand, waved brightly with the other, and shouted across the garden:

“Mommy! Daddy! Come play!”
Diego let out a low, rich laugh, kissed Marisol tenderly on the temple, and stood up, pulling her up with him. Together, hand in hand, they walked out across the sunlit grass toward their daughter—leaving the cold, shadowed walls of the past far behind them forever.
