Chapter 12 - The Quiet Before the StormInside the Villaseñor mansion, however, the air felt remarkably peaceful.

For the first time in four years, Marisol woke up not to the sound of a blaring alarm at 5:00 AM, but to the soft, golden light filtering through the linen drapes of the master suite. Beside her, Valentina was still fast asleep, curled up tightly against Diego’s side, her small hand resting over his forearm as if anchoring him to the earth.
Diego woke up slowly, feeling the gentle warmth of the little girl against him. He turned his head and found Marisol watching them both with a quiet, wondrous expression.
“Good morning,” Diego murmured, his voice thick with sleep, a rare, soft smile breaking across his face.
“Good morning,” Marisol whispered back, reaching out to brush a stray lock of dark hair from his forehead. “I keep thinking I’m going to wake up in the laundry quarters, and this will all have been a very vivid dream.”
Diego caught her hand, pressing a warm kiss against her palm.
“You’re never going back down there, Marisol,” he vowed, his grey eyes locked onto hers with absolute, unyielding intensity. “You and Valentina belong right here. This is your home.”
Later that morning, the family moved down to the glass-enclosed breakfast conservatory that overlooked the manicured gardens. Valentina was happily feeding pieces of scrambled eggs to her stuffed rabbit, giggling as the morning breeze rustled the bougainvillea outside.
Diego watched his daughter with a look of fierce devotion. But beneath his calm exterior, his phone buzzed silently against the table—a encrypted notification from his chief of staff.
Emergency board meeting called by Elena Villaseñor for Monday, 8:00 AM. Topic: Section 14 review.

Diego stared at the screen for three seconds, his jaw tightening into a hard, unyielding line. His mother wasn't backing down. She was taking the war from the courtroom straight to the boardroom.
He slipped the phone back into his pocket, turning back to Marisol and Valentina with a reassuring smile, refusing to let the shadow of corporate politics touch their morning. But as he looked out across the lawn, Diego knew that Monday morning would test whether he was powerful enough to protect the two people who mattered most to him.
