Chapter 13 - Whispers in the ConservatoryThe sunlight in the conservatory was warm, but Marisol felt a sudden, inexplicable chill run down her spine as she watched Diego slip his phone back into his pocket.

Even with his smile, she could read the slight tension in the muscles around his eyes. She had spent four years watching him from the shadows, learning to read his micro-expressions when multi-million-dollar deals hung in the balance.
“Something is wrong,” Marisol said quietly, setting her teacup down on the saucer with a soft clink.
Diego paused, looking up from his plate. He met her dark, intelligent eyes and realized there was no point in trying to shield her from the reality of his world.
“My mother called an emergency board meeting for Monday morning,” Diego admitted, his tone flat and measured. “She’s trying to invoke Section 14 of the family charter—arguing that my personal life creates a conflict of interest that threatens the company’s stability.”
Marisol’s breath caught. The warm domestic bubble around them suddenly felt fragile, threatened by the looming shadow of corporate greed.
“She’s trying to strip your executive control,” Marisol said, her voice trembling slightly. “Because of me. Because we are together, and because Valentina exists.”
“She is trying to protect her legacy, Marisol, but she’s fighting a war that ended the moment I looked into my daughter’s eyes,” Diego replied, his voice firm and steady as he reached across the table to take her hand. “Let her call the board. Let her bring every old-guard executive she has left. They think I built this empire on their terms. I built it from the ground up, and I will tear it down before I let them touch either of you.”
Valentina, sensing the shift in the emotional climate, looked up from her plate, her large dark eyes moving back and forth between them.
“Daddy? Mommy?” the little girl asked softly, tilting her head.

Diego’s expression instantly softened. He leaned over, picking Valentina up and setting her on his lap, burying his face in her curls. “Nothing is wrong, my little princess. Daddy is just making sure everything is taken care of.”
Marisol watched them, her heart swelling with an aching mixture of love and fear. She knew Elena Villaseñor didn't make empty threats. Monday morning was going to be a bloodbath.
