Chapter 6 - The Shadows Close In

The ink of my signature had barely dried on the contract when the gravity of my new reality set in. Antonio’s private study felt suddenly smaller, the air thick with the unspoken weight of his world.
“A wise choice, Sophie,” Antonio said quietly, retrieving the signed document and sliding it into a leather folder. “From this moment, your safety is guaranteed under the protection of the Russo name. But protection comes with vigilance.”
He gestured for me to sit in one of the leather armchairs facing his desk. Victor stepped inside, holding a small, sleek black smartphone and a set of keys.
“You will no longer use your old phone,” Antonio explained, sliding the device across the desk. “This line is encrypted, tied directly to our private network. Victor has already packed your essential belongings from your apartment. By tonight, you will be relocated to a secure residence downtown.”
My heart skipped a beat. “Relocated? Wait, you’re moving me out of my apartment? I can't just leave my home!”
“Your apartment is no longer safe,” Antonio interrupted, his voice dropping into a stern, unyielding register. “Within two hours of you leaving Bellarosa last night, men from the Moretti syndicate—our primary rivals—prowled your building asking questions about the waitress who spent the evening with Maria. If you had stayed there another night, you wouldn't be sitting here talking to me.”
The blood drained from my face. The reality of the mafia war I had accidentally stumbled into crashed over me like a freezing wave. I wasn’t just a nursing student with a debt anymore; I was a pawn on a chessboard where kings played with live ammunition.

“What do the Morettis want with me?” I whispered, my voice trembling.
“They want leverage,” Antonio replied, his dark eyes flashing with suppressed fury. “They know my mother is my only true vulnerability. And they know you are the only outsider she has welcomed in years. To them, you are a tool to break me.”
