Chapter 14 - The Proposal at SunsetAntonio drove us out to an expansive, secluded cliffside estate overlooking the Atlantic Ocean just past Coney Island. A sprawling Victorian house sat surrounded by manicured gardens and wild roses, the late afternoon sun casting a golden glow over the entire coastline.

We walked along the wooden deck overlooking the crashing waves below. The salty breeze whipped my hair around my face, and I turned to Antonio with a questioning smile.

“Whose place is this?” I asked.

“It’s ours—if you want it,” Antonio replied softly, turning to face me fully. His dark eyes held a raw, vulnerable depth I had never seen before.

My breath caught in my throat. “Antonio... what is this?”

“For years, my life was defined by walls, enemies, and obligations,” Antonio said, taking both of my hands in his. “I built an empire to protect everything I loved, but I was always standing alone in the dark. Then a stubborn, brave nursing student spilled bread crumbs and helped my mother when nobody else was watching.”

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, opening it to reveal a stunning diamond ring that caught the dying sunlight like a spark of pure fire.

“You brought light into my world, Sophie. You showed me that I could have a real life outside of the darkness,” Antonio whispered, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. “Will you stay with me? Not as a protected guest, but as my wife?”

Tears welled up in my eyes, blurring the ocean view. All the fear, the danger, and the uncertainty of our initial meeting melted away, replaced by an absolute, unshakeable certainty.

“Yes,” I choked out, a bright laugh breaking through my tears. “Yes, Antonio, I will.”
