Chapter 13 - A New BeginningTwo weeks later, my life felt like it belonged to a completely different person.

The clinic where I worked had promoted me to a full administrative supervisor position, backed by the healthcare foundation grant. My old apartment building was a distant memory, replaced by a permanent, sunlit loft apartment in a quiet, safe neighborhood in Brooklyn—purchased anonymously, though I knew exactly who was responsible.

Maria was well, recovering nicely from her seasonal health flare-ups, and our weekly afternoon tea sessions at her private estate had become a cherished ritual. She looked at me not just as the girl who helped her with her pills, but as family.

And Antonio? Our relationship had evolved past the boundaries of protector and protected. We dined together several nights a week, walking side by side through the park without hiding, blending into the city life he secretly longed to enjoy more openly.

One sunny afternoon, as I stepped out of the clinic with a stack of patient files, a familiar sleek black Mercedes pulled up to the curb. The rear door opened, and Antonio stepped out, wearing a simple navy blazer instead of his usual intimidating three-piece suit.

“Finished early?” he asked, a rare, genuine smile touching the corner of his lips.

“Just wrapped up,” I smiled, walking over to him. “What are you doing here in the middle of the day? Don’t you have a shipping empire to run?”

“I’ve delegated,” Antonio murmured, reaching out to take the files from my hands and sliding his fingers securely into mine. “My mother invited us for Sunday dinner at the mansion. But before that... I want to show you something.”
