Chapter 18 - The Next GenerationBy late autumn, a joyful new chapter began to unfold within our family.

Maria had been staying with us for the past week, and I noticed she had been watching me with a knowing, affectionate sparkle in her eyes, constantly insisting I rest and eat more than usual.

One evening after dinner, as we sat by the crackling fireplace in the grand living room, I felt a sudden wave of dizziness. When I stood up to clear the dessert plates, my vision blurred for a split second, and I wobbled slightly.

Antonio was by my side in an instant, catching me by the waist with a look of pure panic. “Sophie? Are you alright? What’s wrong?”

Before I could answer, Maria set her teacup down on the saucer with a soft click and broke into a knowing, radiant smile.

“She’s fine, my son,” Maria said softly, her eyes shining with unshed tears of joy. “In fact, she is better than fine.”

Antonio looked between Maria and me, his dark eyes wide with sudden realization. “Mother... what do you mean?”

I placed a hand gently over my stomach, a breathless laugh escaping my lips as the pieces clicked together. “I haven’t felt well for the past three mornings, Antonio. I took a test this afternoon.”

Silence descended upon the room for a heart-stopping second. Then, the formidable mafia boss—the man who controlled the underworld of New York, who never flinched in the face of danger—turned completely pale, his hands trembling slightly as he stared at me in absolute disbelief.

“A... a child?” Antonio whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion so raw and profound it brought tears to my eyes.

“We’re going to have a baby,” I smiled, pulling his hand down against my stomach.

Antonio pulled me into his arms, burying his face in my neck, holding me with a fierce, tender protectiveness that made my heart overflow. Across the room, Maria wiped a happy tear from her cheek, whispering a silent prayer of gratitude to the heavens.
