Chapter 16 - The Quiet Aftermath

Six months after our wedding, the underworld of New York had settled into a profound, unprecedented peace. Without the constant threat of syndicate wars, Antonio began shifting a significant portion of Russo enterprises away from traditional grey-market holdings and entirely into legitimate global shipping, real estate development, and philanthropic healthcare initiatives.

It was a Saturday morning, and our coastal estate was bathed in the warm, golden light of early autumn. I stood on the back veranda, wearing a comfortable oversized sweater, sipping a warm cup of coffee while watching the waves crash against the rocks below.

Footsteps echoed softly behind me, followed by the familiar warmth of strong arms wrapping securely around my waist. Antonio rested his chin on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my hair.

“What are you thinking about so early, mio amore?” Antonio murmured, his voice rich and relaxed.

“Just looking at how far we’ve come,” I smiled, leaning back against his chest. “If someone had told me a year ago that I’d be standing here as your wife, overlooking the ocean instead of dodging tables at Bellarosa, I would have thought they belonged in an asylum.”

Antonio chuckled softly, turning me around so I could face him. The harsh, guarded edge that used to define his expression was entirely gone, replaced by a deep, settled contentment.

“Fate has a strange way of finding its balance,” Antonio said, gently kissing my forehead. “You didn’t just change my life, Sophie. You saved it.”
