Chapter 7 - The Interrogation

By noon, Michael had cracked under the pressure of his family’s demands and driven up to Westchester.

My father spotted his sedan pulling into our driveway and alerted me from the front window. “He’s here. Do you want me to handle him, or do you want to talk?”

“I’ll talk to him,” I said, standing up and smoothing down my sweater. “Once and for all.”

I met Michael on the front porch. He looked exhausted, his hair unstyled, wearing the same suit jacket he had worn to dinner the night before. The confident, smug posture he usually wore around his mother was entirely gone, replaced by anxious frustration.

“Allison, what is going on?” Michael demanded the moment I stepped outside. “Mom is in tears, Jessica is screaming that her son is going to get expelled, and the private school office called me twice this morning saying the recurring automatic wire transfer failed.”

“The recurring wire transfer was tied to my business account, Michael,” I said calmly, crossing my arms.

He stared at me, blinking. “What do you mean? You said you paid for things, but... I thought we pooled our money. You stayed home!”

“I didn't stay home, Michael. I work from home. My consulting firm generates three times what your corporate salary brings in,” I said, letting the numbers hit him like cold water. “And for the record, I didn't ‘pool’ my money. I subsidized your family’s entire lifestyle because you were too proud to admit your sister was drowning in debt and your mother’s pension barely covered her condo.”

Michael shook his head, backing up a step. “That’s... that’s not true. Mom told me your business was just a hobby. She said you used your savings for a few little extras, but that I was the one supporting our household.”

I let out a dry, humorless laugh. “Your mother lied to stroke your ego. And you were too comfortable to check the bank statements.”
