Chapter 5 - Sanctuary at Home

My parents’ house in Westchester was quiet when the cab dropped me off at midnight.

My mother opened the front door in her bathrobe, taking one look at my pale face and single suitcase before pulling me into a fierce, wordless hug. My father stood behind her in the hallway, his expression darkening with protective fury as I briefly explained that Michael had asked for a divorce over dinner, entirely unaware of the pregnancy or the financial reality behind our marriage.

“The ungrateful ingrates,” my father muttered, shaking his head. “We warned you, Allison, but you always tried to keep the peace for Michael’s sake.”

“The peace is over, Dad,” I said softly, sinking into the familiar armchair in the living room.

I opened my manila folder on the coffee table. Under the desk lamp, the numbers laid out an undeniable truth. Over the past seven years, Michael’s salary as a mid-level corporate director covered roughly half of our apartment rent and utilities. Everything else—our vacations, my health insurance, the grocery bills, Jessica’s private loans, Carol’s annual medical deductibles, and Tony’s elite schooling—had been heavily subsidized by my separate investments and the steady revenue of my consulting firm.

Michael thought he was the sole provider of our household because his mother and sister had carefully cultivated that narrative, stroking his ego while treating me like a leech behind closed doors.

By morning, the illusion would shatter completely. And I intended to be entirely spectators to their financial freefall.
