Chapter 15 - The Temporary Hearing

The temporary financial hearing took place in a bustling Manhattan family courtroom on a crisp Thursday morning.

Michael walked in looking like a ghost. Dark circles framed his eyes, his suit was slightly rumpled, and he looked ten pounds lighter than he had at our dinner table a month ago. Carol and Jessica weren't allowed inside the courtroom, but I heard they were waiting anxiously out in the hallway.

When our case was called, Sarah Vance stepped up to the podium and laid out our evidence with clinical, devastating precision.

She presented my business tax returns, my separate investment accounts, and the comprehensive ledger proving that Michael’s income had covered less than forty percent of our household expenses during the marriage, while my independent consulting earnings had funded everything else—including his sister’s family liabilities.

Michael’s attorney stammered through an unconvincing argument about marital standard of living, but Judge Sterling cut him off halfway through.

“Counsel, your client is asking for temporary spousal support from a woman who has demonstrably been the primary financial provider of the household,” Judge Sterling stated, his voice sharp and unimpressed. “Furthermore, the financial records clearly indicate that marital funds were repeatedly diverted to support third-party relatives without mutual transparency.”

The judge denied Michael’s motion for spousal support in its entirety, instead ordering a preliminary child support assessment pending the final custody and asset division proceedings.

As the judge banged his gavel, Michael looked across the courtroom aisle at me. His eyes were filled with a mixture of profound regret and quiet defeat.

I gathered my papers, slipped them into my leather folio, and walked out of the courtroom with my head held high, ready for whatever chapter came next.
