Chapter 17 - The Nesting Ground

Back in Westchester, my parents’ house had transformed into a peaceful sanctuary of preparation and healing.

My father had cleared out his old home office on the ground floor, converting it into a sunlit nursery nook where boxes of baby clothes, a bassinet, and books stacked neatly on wooden shelves awaited the baby’s arrival. My mother spent her afternoons baking healthy meals and helping me design a comfortable nursery layout.

I was now eighteen weeks along. My belly had begun to show a sweet, undeniable roundness, and every kick felt like a reminder of the strength I had found when everything else fell apart.

My consulting business was thriving more than ever. Freed from the emotional drain of managing Michael’s family secrets, I had signed two major new corporate clients, doubling my monthly revenue and securing a rock-solid financial future entirely independent of any marital settlement.

One afternoon, as I was reviewing contract drafts at the dining table, my phone buzzed with an email notification from Sarah Vance.

Subject: Draft Settlement Offer from Opposing Counsel

I opened the attachment. Michael’s lawyer had submitted an unconditional surrender: he was offering to sign an uncontested divorce decree granting me full custody preference, keeping our respective separate assets completely untouched, and relinquishing any claims to my business revenue.

He just wanted it over. He wanted out of the shadow his family had cast over his life.

I didn't feel triumph or malice. I just felt closure.
