Chapter 16 - The Hallway Fallout

When Michael walked out of the courtroom into the marble-floored corridor, Carol and Jessica were waiting by the elevators like two vultures scenting defeat.
“Well?” Carol demanded, grabbing her son’s arm before he could even catch his breath. “Did the judge grant the support? Does she have to pay for your apartment expenses and legal fees?”
Michael stared at his mother, his expression hollow. The exhaustion of the past month seemed to finally crush whatever blind loyalty he had left toward her.
“No, Mom,” Michael said, his voice completely flat. “The judge denied it.”
Jessica scoffed, throwing her hands up. “Denied it? On what grounds? You’re the husband! She’s been sitting at home freeloading off your salary while you work your tail off!”
“She wasn't freeloading, Jessica,” Michael snapped, his voice rising with sudden, bitter fury that made both women flinch. “She was supporting us. Do you hear me? For seven years, my salary didn't even cover our rent. Every luxury we had, every medical bill, every car lease payment, and Tony’s entire private school tuition came out of her consulting business account.”
The hallway fell dead silent. A few lawyers walking by turned their heads at the outburst.
Carol’s face turned an ugly shade of mottled pale. “That’s... that’s a lie. She brainwashed you! She’s trying to manipulate the court—”
“The judge saw the audited financial ledgers, Mom!” Michael shouted, rubbing his temples in despair. “The bank records don't lie. You lied to me. You made me believe she was useless so you could keep milking her success behind my back. And now she’s divorcing me, I’m stuck with back rent I can't afford, and Tony is kicked out of school.”
Jessica stared at her brother in absolute horror, realizing that her golden goose had finally flown away for good.

I walked past them toward the exit doors, holding my leather folio, not even pausing to look at the wreckage they had made of their own lives.
