Chapter 6 - The Morning After

The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of my childhood bedroom, casting soft geometric patterns across the hardwood floor. For the first time in seven years, I woke up without the lingering anxiety of playing referee between my husband and his demanding family.

My phone, which I had left on the bedside table with the sound turned on, buzzed relentlessly by 7:15 AM.

I picked it up. The notification screen was flooded.

Michael: Allison, please answer. What did you mean about Tony’s tuition?

Michael: Mom says you’re lying to stir up trouble.

Jessica: What kind of sick game are you playing? Tony’s school called about the overdue wire transfer!

Carol: You have no shame, trying to sabotage my grandson’s education out of spite just because your marriage failed.

I sat up against the pillows, scrolling through the frantic messages with cold detachment. They hadn't stopped to verify the facts; they had immediately defaulted to outrage and blame.

My father knocked softly on the door before pushing it open, holding a mug of steaming coffee and a plate of toast.

“Morning, sweetie,” Dad said, his eyes scanning my face. “How did you sleep?”

“Better than I have in months,” I replied, taking the mug.

“Good. Because your phone has been vibrating like a hive of angry bees downstairs. Michael is losing his mind.”

I took a sip of the coffee, letting the warmth settle in my chest. “Let him. For seven years, they treated my independence like a crime while secretly living off the fruits of it. It’s time they learned what financial gravity actually feels like.”
