Chapter 8 - The Aftermath in the Hallway

When Marcus and I walked out of the courtroom fifteen minutes later, the hallway was deserted except for Ryan’s defense lawyer, who was hastily packing his briefcase and avoiding eye contact.

As I adjusted Emma’s carrier strap over my shoulder, the heavy door to the holding cell corridor clicked open.

Two officers led Ryan out, his wrists still cuffed, his shoulders completely caved in. He looked smaller, stripped of the arrogant smirk he had worn while watching his mother pour freezing water over my postpartum body just days ago.

He stopped a few feet from me, his eyes bloodshot and desperate.

“Claire...” he choked out, his voice cracking. “Please. Talk to me. Drop the criminal charges. We have a daughter. How can you be so cold?”

I looked at the man I had loved, supported, and excused for eleven years. The man who had looted my inheritance, watched his mother abuse me while I was healing from major surgery, and laughed while I shivered in wet clothes.

“When you and your mother poured freezing water over my head ten days ago, Ryan, you made a fundamental miscalculation,” I said, my voice steady, quiet, and absolutely lethal. “You thought my silence meant I was weak. You thought because I was recovering, I couldn't fight back.”

I stepped closer, letting him see the cold, unyielding resolve in my eyes.

“I’m not cold, Ryan. I’m just finished making excuses for cowards. Enjoy your time in holding. My lawyers will see you at the divorce and sentencing hearings.”

Without waiting for him to reply, I turned my back on him for the final time, walking down the courthouse steps into the bright, warm autumn sunlight.
