Chapter 6 - The Manhattan Superior Court

The corridors of the Manhattan Superior Court on Wednesday morning smelled like old paper, floor wax, and quiet desperation.

By 9:45 a.m., I walked through the double doors of Courtroom 302, carrying Emma in her infant carrier with one hand and a sleek leather briefcase in the other. My mother-in-law, Linda, was already sitting on the wooden bench in the hallway, looking utterly disheveled without her usual manicured poise. Next to her sat Ryan’s defense attorney, a sharp-looking man in a rumpled gray suit who was furiously flipping through a legal pad.

When Linda saw me walk past, her face twisted in a mask of bitter fury. She half-started from her seat, as if she wanted to lunge at me, but a court officer stepped forward instantly, resting a hand on his holster.

“Stay back, ma’am,” the officer warned.

I didn't flinch. I didn't even slow down. I gave Linda one cold, level look and walked straight through the double doors into the courtroom where Marcus Sterling was already organizing our files.

Marcus looked up, noting my calm composure and the baby carrier I gently set beside the defense table.

“How are you holding up, Claire?” Marcus asked quietly, adjusting his titanium-framed glasses.

“I’m running on adrenaline and black coffee, Marcus,” I whispered back, taking a seat. “And I’m ready to close the ledger on these parasites.”

At precisely 10:00 a.m., the bailiff’s voice boomed through the room. “All rise for the Honorable Judge Elizabeth Vance—no relation, though I appreciate the ambition.”

A murmur of quiet laughter rippled through the gallery as Judge Vance took her seat, her gaze sharp and analytical behind her wire-rimmed glasses.
