Chapter 7 - The Injunction

The hearing moved with terrifying speed.

Marcus Sterling stood before the bench, projecting a clean, airtight digital ledger onto the courtroom’s central display monitors.

“Your Honor,” Marcus began, his voice ringing with crisp authority. “We are presenting irrefutable forensic evidence that the defendant, Ryan Vance, systematically forged corporate signatures and diverted four hundred and twelve thousand dollars of marital trust assets into unauthorized personal shell accounts over the past fourteen months.”

Up on the screen flashed side-by-side comparisons of my genuine signature alongside the clumsy, traceable forgeries Ryan had executed late at night in our home study.

At the defense table, Ryan—who had just been brought in from holding in a standard orange jumpsuit—slumped forward, burying his face in his cuffed hands. His defense attorney stood up to object, stammering something about “marital asset sharing,” but Judge Vance cut him off with a single wave of her hand.

“Counsel, forgery of a primary beneficiary’s signature on a protected family trust is not ‘marital asset sharing,’” Judge Vance said coldly. “It’s grand larceny in the second degree.”

She looked down from the bench straight at Ryan.

“The preliminary injunction is granted,” Judge Vance announced, her gavel coming down with a sharp, echoing crack. “All remaining personal and corporate bank accounts held by Ryan Vance are frozen indefinitely. Furthermore, the deed transfer of the Maine coastal property to the defendant’s mother, Linda Vance, is hereby voided, returning 100% ownership back to Claire Vance immediately.”

A choked gasp of pure rage echoed from the gallery as Linda stood up, shaking her fists.

“This is an outrage!” Linda shrieked. “She trapped him! She set him up!”

“Remove that woman from the courtroom immediately,” Judge Vance ordered without blinking.

Two bailiffs grabbed Linda by the arms and dragged her protesting, screaming voice out through the double doors, leaving a heavy, stunned silence in their wake.
