Chapter 11 - The Quiet After Street

The transition from the legal battlefield of Manhattan back to the quiet, tree-lined sanctuary of our home always felt like stepping into another dimension.

By the second week following the court injunction, the initial media flurry surrounding Ryan’s arrest had quieted down. The tabloid journalists who had briefly camped out near the cul-de-sac soon realized there was no dramatic family feud left to film—only a mother and her infant daughter quietly reclaiming their space.

I unlocked the front door, kicked off my flats, and let out a long, grounding breath.

The house was warm, smelling faintly of lavender and clean linen. I walked into the kitchen, prepared a bottle for Emma, and looked out the window at the backyard where the autumn leaves were turning a brilliant shade of amber.

My phone buzzed on the kitchen island.

It was a text from Marcus Sterling:

> Preliminary criminal settlement terms filed. Ryan’s public defender is offering a guilty plea to avoid a full jury trial on the forgery charges. He’s looking at three to five years. Let me know if you want to sign off.

I stared at the screen for a long moment, watching the blue notification light blink.

Three to five years in a federal holding facility. Not because I had schemed against him, but because he had believed his own arrogance over the law.

I tapped out a quick reply: “Sign off. Let’s close the chapter.”
