Chapter 4 - The Midnight Audit

By 11:00 p.m., the police had come and gone, taking Ryan’s statements and issuing a temporary restraining order that kept both him and Linda fifty yards away from the property. Their remaining suitcases were sitting out by the curb under a light drizzle, looking pathetic and small.

I sat at the kitchen island, nursing a sleeping Emma in the quiet warmth of the house, while Mr. Henderson laid out the rest of the financial audit across the marble countertop.

“The local precinct is holding Ryan for questioning regarding the forged loan documents,” Mr. Henderson reported, sliding a final summary sheet toward me. “And Marcus Sterling—your family’s senior corporate litigator—has already been notified. He’s freezing all of Ryan’s remaining corporate credit lines and seizing his vehicle leases by morning.”

I traced my fingers over Emma’s soft blanket, feeling a strange mixture of profound grief and liberating clarity.

“How long did they think they could keep this hidden, Mr. Henderson?” I asked quietly.

“Indefinitely, I imagine,” Mr. Henderson replied with a sympathetic sigh. “They assumed that because you were focused on the pregnancy and recovering from childbirth, you wouldn't check the quarterly trust statements until it was too late to reverse the asset transfers.”

They had miscalculated.

They thought a woman ten days postpartum, bleeding, exhausted, and humiliated with a pitcher of cold water, was too broken to fight back. They thought my silence was weakness.

“Thank you, Mr. Henderson,” I said, looking up with steady eyes. “Tell Marcus Sterling I want a full forensic audit of every single dollar Ryan touched since the day we got married. I don't want to leave them a single penny.”

“Consider it done, Mrs. Vance,” he said respectfully, packing up his briefcase and heading toward the front door.

As the door clicked shut behind him, the house grew completely still. I looked down at my daughter, her tiny chest rising and falling in peaceful rhythm.

“We’re going to be just fine, sweet girl,” I whispered, pressing a kiss to her soft forehead. “ Mommy’s awake now.”
