Chapter 9 - The Final ConfrontationThe dingy, overpriced midtown Manhattan maternity clinic was a far cry from the opulent private hospitals Vanessa had bragged about demanding for her prenatal care.

I pushed open the frosted glass door and stepped into the sterile, cramped waiting room. The fluorescent lights flickered softly above rows of cracked vinyl chairs.
Sitting in the corner, clutching a cheap plastic purse and staring blankly at a wall-mounted television playing daytime infomercials, was Vanessa.
She looked up as the door chimed. When her eyes locked onto mine, the color drained entirely from her face. She instinctively shrank back against the wall, as if expecting federal marshals or physical violence.
Instead, I walked slowly across the linoleum floor, stopped two feet away from her chair, and looked down with quiet, impenetrable calm.
“E-Elena...” Vanessa stammered, her voice shaking violently as she pulled her coat tighter around her shoulders. “What are you doing here? Did Adrian send you?”
“Adrian doesn't know where I am,” I replied evenly, sliding my sunglasses up onto the bridge of my nose. “He’s currently being escorted off Wall Street by federal security.”
Vanessa swallowed hard, a fresh tear spilling over her lower lashes. “I didn't mean... I was just playing a game, Elena. Adrian told me you were just a charity case he picked up, I swear he—im-promised me a life—”
“A life built on stepping over other people,” I finished for her. “You thought you were climbing the ladder of Manhattan society, Vanessa. But you were just climbing a scaffold designed to drop you right back where you started.”
I reached into my designer leather handbag, pulled out a white envelope, and laid it gently on the empty chair beside her.
“What’s this?” Vanessa whispered, eyeing the envelope fearfully.
“A certified check from the Bennett Foundation, equivalent to one year of basic living expenses and medical care for the child,” I said quietly. “My father honors his word—the baby is innocent, and it will be provided for. But the moment that money clears, your name, your phone number, and your existence are permanently scrubbed from every database accessible to our family.”
Vanessa stared at the envelope, her lower lip trembling uncontrollably. She didn't touch it. She didn't look up. The fierce, venomous ambition that had fueled her cruelty just days ago had completely evaporated, leaving behind a terrified, utterly defeated woman.

I turned on my heel, my heels clicking sharply against the linoleum floor, and walked out of the clinic into the crisp autumn air.
I didn't look back.
