Chapter 5 - The Eviction“Federal Marshals! Open the front door!”

The sound ricocheted through the soaring ceilings of the mansion.
Adrian flinched violently, stepping back as if physical blows were about to rain down on him again. Vanessa clutched her handbag to her chest like a shield, her breath coming in short, terrified gasps.
“Go down and answer it, Adrian,” I said smoothly, stepping past them toward the hallway. “Your guests have arrived.”
He didn't move. He stood paralyzed by the sheer terror of cascading, unstoppable ruin.
Without waiting for him, I walked down the grand staircase—the exact marble steps where my blood had stained the floor less than twelve hours earlier—and strode across the foyer to unlock the heavy oak front door.
Standing on the porch were two men in dark federal suits bearing the insignia of the U.S. Marshals Service, flanked by three armed local deputies and a civilian in a sharp grey suit holding a thick leather briefcase.
“Mrs. Vale?” the lead Marshal asked politely, touching the brim of his cap.
“Good morning, gentlemen,” I replied, my voice steady and composed. “You’re right on time.”
The civilian with the briefcase stepped forward, opening it to reveal a stack of legal documents bearing a federal judge’s signature. “I am Marcus Sterling, senior legal counsel for the Bennett Estate and Sovereign Trust holdings. We are executing an immediate writ of possession and asset seizure for the premises located at 4428 Oakridge Estates.”
“Understood, Mr. Sterling,” I nodded, stepping aside to let them enter. “The previous occupants are currently upstairs trying to process reality. Feel free to clear the premises.”
As the Marshals marched past me into the foyer, Adrian appeared at the top of the stairs, looking down like a deposed king watching his castle burn.
“You can’t do this!” Adrian shouted, his voice cracking with desperate rage as he pointed a shaking finger at the federal agents. “This is private property! I have rights! I demand to speak to a judge!”
The lead Marshal didn't even blink. He walked halfway up the stairs, pulled a folded parchment document from his breast pocket, and unfolded it.
“Adrian Vale, by order of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, pursuant to federal asset forfeiture warrant case number 2026-SR-884, you and all unauthorized occupants are hereby ordered to vacate this property within thirty minutes,” the Marshal recited flatly. “Failure to comply will result in immediate physical removal and detention for obstruction of justice.”
Vanessa let out a sharp, breathless sob, sinking onto the top step of the staircase and burying her face in her hands.
Adrian looked down at the Marshal, then down at me standing by the open front door, bathed in the brilliant morning light. The final, crushing realization finally settled into his hollow eyes: he hadn't married a helpless nobody. He had provoked a sleeping dragon, and the fire had consumed everything he ever built.
“Who... who are you, Elena?” Adrian whispered, his voice breaking into a pathetic whine as he stared down at me. “Please... just tell me who your family is.”
May you like
I smiled faintly, turning my back on him as I stepped out onto the porch into the fresh morning air.
“My name is Elena Bennett,” I said over my shoulder. “And your lesson is just beginning.”
