Chapter 3 - The Sovereign Shadow“The accounts are frozen, sweetheart,” my father’s voice rumbled through the phone, steady and devoid of warmth. “That takes care of his corporate facade. But financial ruin is too merciful for a man who raises his hand against my blood.”

I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second, feeling the cold air of the foyer sweep across my face. “Dad, what else are you doing?”

“Your mother never forgave the world for what happened to our family, and neither did I,” he replied softly. “The asset freeze was just an automated administrative action by our private treasury board. By dawn, Vale Enterprises won't just be bankrupt—it will be liquidated down to its office chairs, and every investor who backed him will distance themselves like he carries the plague.”

“And Adrian?” I asked, glancing down at the trembling man weeping on the floor.

“Adrian is finished in this country, in Europe, and anywhere else high finance operates. But before we finalize his destruction, I’m sending a car for you. Get your things, Elena. Come home.”

“No, Dad,” I said, opening my eyes. A sudden, fierce independence flared in my chest. “Not yet. I’m not leaving tonight. I want to watch him try to put his broken pieces together tomorrow morning.”

A low chuckle hummed through the secure line. “As you wish, my girl. Your mother would be proud of your spine. If you need anything—security, lawyers, a battalion—just say the word.”

The line went dead.

I lowered my phone and looked down at Adrian. He was staring at the ceiling, his breathing coming in shallow, panicked gasps, muttering incoherently to himself.

Vanessa, meanwhile, had completely lost her composure. The champagne glass slipped from her fingers, shattering against the marble in a violent explosion of glass and dark liquid.

“This isn't real!” Vanessa screamed, spinning around to face me, her mask of polished sophistication completely destroyed. “Who are you?! What did you do to him?!”

I walked slowly toward the sweeping staircase, stepping carefully over the shards of her wineglass. I paused on the bottom step and looked down at her with an expression of supreme, icy indifference.

“You wanted to know why I let him call me a mysterious nobody, Vanessa?” I asked, my voice cutting through the silent foyer like a razor. “It’s because when you live among insects, you don't need to remind them that you’re a god.”

Vanessa recoiled as if I had struck her across the face. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.

I turned my back on them, walking up the grand staircase toward the master suite, leaving the two architects of my humiliation wallowing in the wreckage of their own manufactured reality.

Behind me, I could hear Vanessa’s shrill, hysterical voice turning on Adrian, screaming accusations as the reality of their sudden, total destitution finally set in.

Let them tear each other apart. The night was still young, and dawn was going to be very, very expensive for them.
