Chapter 18 - A Quiet Afternoon in the ParkA year after my return to the public sphere, I took a peaceful Sunday afternoon stroll through Central Park. The crisp autumn air carried the laughter of children playing near the Bethesda Fountain and the distant melody of a street violinist.

I wore a simple camel-wool coat and dark sunglasses, blending seamlessly into the vibrant tapestry of New York life.

As I walked down a shaded gravel pathway, a man pushing a battered stroller caught my peripheral vision. He wore a faded baseball cap pulled low over his eyes and a cheap jacket.

Adrian.

He had aged ten years in three. His shoulders were permanently slumped, his posture defeated as he muttered softly to his infant son in the stroller, trying to soothe the baby’s fussing.

He didn't see me standing beside a towering oak tree. He was just another ghost haunting the edges of a city that had discarded him.

I paused for a fraction of a second, watching him adjust the blanket around his child with clumsy, desperate care. There was no surge of triumphant vengeance in my chest. No anger. Just a profound, liberating emptiness. The monster who had once struck me twenty times beneath a crystal chandelier was now completely irrelevant—a footnote in a story he had failed to understand.

I turned quietly and walked away, leaving him to the quiet, inescapable weight of his own ordinary reality.
