Chapter 13 - A Chance Encounter on Madison AvenueLater that afternoon, while walking down Madison Avenue to inspect a newly acquired commercial property for the Bennett Foundation, a familiar figure caught my eye outside a crowded café.

He was wearing a cheap, off-the-rack trench coat that was two sizes too big for his frame. His hair, once meticulously styled with high-end pomade, was unwashed and graying at the temples. He was hunched over a small plastic table, clutching a cardboard coffee cup with trembling hands, staring blankly at the bustling sidewalk.

Adrian.

He looked ten years older, hollowed out by the relentless grind of survival in a city that no longer had a place for him.

As I drew closer, my heels clicking rhythmically against the pavement, he looked up. His eyes locked onto mine.

For a second, his breath hitched. He tried to shrink back into his chair, pulling the collar of his coat up around his face, praying with every fiber of his being that I would walk past him and pretend he didn't exist.

I didn't walk past. I stopped right beside his table, casting a long shadow across his coffee cup.

“Hello, Adrian,” I said, my voice smooth, even, and entirely devoid of malice.

Adrian swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively. He looked up at me, his eyes wide, watery, and filled with a desperate, humiliating plea for mercy.

“Elena...” he croaked, his voice cracking. “Please... I know what I did. I was a monster. I pay for it every single day. I can't even get a bank account under my own name.”

“You’re alive, Adrian,” I replied quietly, looking down at him with detached curiosity. “You have your life, your health, and your freedom. Things you tried to systematically strip away from me while I knelt on a marble floor.”

Tears spilled over his lower lashes, cutting tracks through the dust on his cheeks. “I was arrogant. I thought I was a king. I didn't know who you were...”

“That was your fatal flaw,” I said, turning away to resume my walk down the avenue. “You never bothered to look past the surface to see the foundation holding your entire world together. Enjoy your quiet life, Adrian. You earned every single piece of it.”
