Chapter 2 - The Sound of Collapsing TowersThe seconds immediately following my call ticked away in an agonizing, pregnant silence.

Adrian stood frozen by the staircase, his hand resting loosely on Vanessa’s waist. He forced a strained, mocking laugh, trying to mask the sudden prickle of sweat breaking out across his forehead.

“Who was that? Your desperate, broke uncle?” Adrian scoffed, though his eyes darted nervously toward my phone. “You think a phone call is going to scare me, Elena? I have a board meeting at nine o'clock tomorrow morning with the partners of Vanguard Capital. My liquidity is triple-A rated. I am untouchable.”

I didn't answer him. I remained kneeling on the white marble, my phone clutched tightly in my hand, my gaze locked on his face.

Brrrring.

Adrian’s private corporate cell phone, resting on the mahogany console table, suddenly lit up.

He blinked, surprised, and reached for it. He glanced at the caller ID, swiped the screen, and pressed it to his ear.

“Marcus? What is it? It’s past midnight,” Adrian said, his corporate charm automatically sliding back into his voice.

Silence stretched from the phone. Marcus, Adrian’s chief financial officer, was apparently talking at a frantic pace.

As the seconds ticked by, the confident, self-assured smirk on Adrian’s face began to warp, stretching into an expression of unadulterated bewilderment. The color drained rapidly from his cheeks, leaving him looking like a corpse under the harsh glare of the crystal chandelier.

“What do you mean, frozen?” Adrian stammered, his voice cracking. “Check the primary operating accounts at Chase! That’s corporate reserve capital! ... No, transfer it from the offshore holding— What do you mean insufficient funds?!”

Vanessa stopped smiling. Her champagne glass tilted dangerously in her hand, a few drops of dark red wine spilling onto the pristine fabric of her designer dress.

“Adrian?” Vanessa whispered, her voice tightening with sudden panic. “What’s happening?”

Before Adrian could answer, his personal cell phone buzzed violently in his palm again.

Brrrring. Brrrring.

Another call. Then, almost instantly, a third line started ringing—his private banking liaison.

Adrian didn't answer the second or third calls. He stared at the screen as if it were a venomous snake about to strike. He slowly lowered the phone, his hands trembling so violently he nearly dropped the expensive titanium device onto the marble floor.

“Our accounts...” Adrian whispered, his voice reduced to a dry, horrified rasp. “Every single operating account, personal trust, and line of credit... they’ve been locked by federal regulatory freeze orders.”

I pushed myself up from the floor, my legs aching, but my posture tall and unyielding. I looked down at him with quiet pity.

“That’s impossible,” Vanessa hissed, stepping forward and grabbing his arm. “Call your lawyers! Call the SEC! Nobody can just freeze a multi-million-dollar portfolio without a court order!”

“There was a court order,” a fourth phone call began blaring from the console table—his attorney’s emergency line.

Adrian answered it on speakerphone with a shaking finger.

“Mr. Vale?” a frantic voice shouted from the tiny speaker. “I don't know what kind of geopolitical hornet’s nest you kicked, but my firm has just been hit with emergency asset forfeiture injunctions filed directly by the Federal Reserve and backed by an unsealed directive from the Department of Justice’s sovereign wealth division! Every asset associated with Vale Enterprises has been flagged as high-risk state-level security collateral! Who the hell are you married to?!”

The phone went dead with a sharp click.

Adrian slowly dropped his arm. His knees buckled under the sheer weight of the catastrophe, and he collapsed sideways onto the exact same marble floor where he had just forced me to kneel in my own blood.

And as he stared up at me with eyes wide with sheer, abject terror, my phone rang again in my hand.

May you like

It was my father.

I swiped the screen and brought it to my ear. My father’s calm, unhurried voice came through the speaker, carrying words that made my blood run cold and made me realize that destroying Adrian’s fortune was merely the opening salvo of a much larger war.
