Chapter 7 - The View from Fort Meade

While federal marshals were clearing out Arthur’s corner office in Texas, I was standing in the master briefing auditorium at the Defense Intelligence Agency headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland.

The room was silent except for the low hum of secure servers and the quiet murmurs of forty senior intelligence analysts sitting behind rows of high-definition monitors. Above the main stage, a sixty-foot digital map displayed real-time satellite telemetry from across five continents.

General Mark Vance walked up beside me, handing me a freshly printed briefing binder.

"DCIS and FBI executed the warrants in Austin forty minutes ago," Vance reported quietly. "They seized the primary procurement database. Preliminary forensics already confirmed your team's audit findings—Mercer Tech was using unvetted secondary contractors in Shenzhen to flash fake serial numbers onto low-grade microchips."

I accepted the binder, scanning the initial evidence logs. "How extensive is the breach?"

"They compromised three separate satellite sub-assembly lines," Vance said, shaking his head with disgust. "If Project Sentinel had gone live with those chips, our orbital early-warning array would have experienced a sixty percent blind-spot failure within eighteen months. Your father was playing Russian roulette with national aerospace defense to save eight percent on production margins."

I closed the binder with a sharp thud.

"He isn't my father, Mark," I said softly, my voice devoid of anger, filled only with absolute clarity. "He’s a defense contractor who thought money exempted him from the laws of physics and federal law."

"The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas is preparing the indictment grand jury right now," Vance added. "Arthur, Trevor, and four senior board members are looking at multiple counts of major fraud against the United States, conspiracy, and treasonous supply-chain compromise."

My desk phone chimed on the secure podium console. I tapped the speaker button.

"Director Mercer," my executive assistant's voice came through the line. "I have a caller on line three claiming to be your father's senior legal counsel. He states that Mr. Arthur Mercer is demanding an emergency private audience with you."

I looked up at the vast digital map above the auditorium stage—at the global network of men and women in uniform standing guard across every timezone on Earth.

"Tell his counsel," I replied calmly, "that Director Mercer does not negotiate with targets of active federal indictments. If Mr. Mercer wishes to speak to me, he can do so from a witness stand."
