Chapter 13 - The Reclaimed Land

Three weeks later. A crisp, bright morning in Austin, Texas.
The heavy iron gates of the old Mercer estate in the Texas Hill Country swung open.
The three-hundred-acre ranch—originally bought by my maternal grandfather in 1954—had been stripped of Arthur’s corporate banners, high-end commercial signages, and luxury vehicle fleets following the final bankruptcy settlement.
I walked up the stone steps of the main ranch house wearing a comfortable dark wool coat and boots. Beside me walked Ethan and Sarah, two young Army veterans who had recently completed their service terms and were spearheading the new national security transition program.
Following the total liquidation of Mercer Tech and the dissolution of Apex Global's fraudulent liens, the federal courts had fully restored my mother’s original land holdings to a public land trust managed by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
"It’s incredible, General," Ethan said, looking out over the rolling green hills and pristine oak trees. "The facility plans for the Eleanor Mercer Veterans Leadership & Technology Center were approved by the VA board yesterday."
"My mother loved this land," I said softly, watching a hawk soar high above the valley. "Arthur turned it into a trophy for his corporate ego. Today, it goes back to serving people who actually give everything for this country."
The new center would serve as an advanced technical training academy for transitioning service members, providing full scholarships in cyber intelligence, systems engineering, and aerospace technology—funded entirely by the liquidated assets seized from Arthur’s offshore accounts.

Where Arthur had tried to build an empire of greed, a living sanctuary of honor and public service was taking root.
