Chapter 6 - The Dawn Raid in Austin

At 07:55 AM the following morning, the glass-and-steel monolith of Mercer Defense Technologies sat quietly under the bright Texas sun in North Austin.
Inside the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor, Arthur Mercer was pacing behind his massive mahogany desk, his tailored jacket tossed onto a leather couch. His eyes were bloodshot, his silk tie loosened, and three empty espresso cups littered the polished desk. Trevor sat in a corner chair, staring blankly at his phone, while Evelyn sat nervously tapping her manicured nails on her designer handbag.
"They won't do it," Arthur muttered, his voice hoarse from yelling into his phone for six straight hours. "She was bluffing. Kate wanted to make a point. She wanted to humiliate us at the party, but no three-star general is going to wreck a fourteen-billion-dollar supply line over a personal grudge. It’s un-American."
"Dad," Trevor said softly, his hands trembling slightly. "The bank called twenty minutes ago. They heard rumors about the Project Sentinel review. They’re holding our liquidity draw."
"Tell them to go to hell!" Arthur roared, slamming his fist onto the table. "When the Department of Defense formalizes the contract, we’ll buy that damn bank!"
Before Trevor could reply, the boardroom doors swung open with a heavy, double-paneled bang.
A squad of six federal agents wearing dark blue windbreakers with FBI and DOD-IG printed across their backs strode into the room. Leading them was a sharp-featured woman in a crisp gray suit, holding a red-stamped federal search warrant in her gloved hand.
"Arthur Mercer?" Special Agent Miller announced, her voice echoing clearly off the glass walls. "I am Special Agent Miller with the Defense Criminal Investigative Service. I have a federal search and seizure warrant for all servers, hard drives, financial ledgers, and procurement logs associated with Mercer Defense Tech."
Arthur went deathly still. "What is the meaning of this?! Do you have any idea who I am?! I just met with the Joint Chiefs last night!"
"We know exactly who you are, Mr. Mercer," Agent Miller replied coldly. "And we know that at fourteen-hundred hours yesterday, Director Catherine Mercer signed a Criminal Investigation Referral regarding systematic fraud, hardware counterfeiting, and wire conspiracy within your procurement division."
Behind the federal agents, four uniformed U.S. Marshals stepped into the doorway.
"Wait!" Evelyn shrieked, jumping out of her chair. "She's Arthur's daughter! This is a domestic dispute! She’s using her military authority to settle a family grudge!"
Agent Miller didn't even blink. "Ma'am, step away from the desk. Agents, secure the primary server array and lock down the executive laptops immediately."
"You can't do this!" Trevor screamed, lunging toward his laptop on the conference table to hit a wipe-sequence hotkey.
A U.S. Marshal caught Trevor by his wrist in a flash, twisting his arm behind his back and pinning him flat against the glass wall.
CLICK-CLACK.
The steel handcuffs ratcheted tight around Trevor's soft wrists.
"Trevor!" Evelyn screamed.
Arthur stood frozen behind his desk as federal agents systematically stripped his office—unplugging hard drives, bagging encrypted drives, and boxing twenty years of corporate ledgers.
