Chapter 10 - The Dynasty of Honor

Three months later.

The crisp autumn air of Washington, D.C., was brilliant and clear as the sun rose over Arlington National Cemetery.

I stood on the high granite plaza overlooking the city, wearing my dress blues, holding a warm cup of coffee. Beside me stood General Mark Vance and my chief of staff.

Below us, the headlines on the morning news feeds were clear:

MERCER TECH ASSETS LIQUIDATED IN HISTORIC $4B FEDERAL FORFEITURE.

ARTHUR MERCER SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON.

TREVOR MERCER RECEIVES 3 YEARS PROBATION FOLLOWING FULL COOPERATION.

The corporate empire that Arthur had built on arrogance and shortcuts had completely vanished, its assets absorbed by legitimate, vetted domestic manufacturing firms. Evelyn had returned to Florida after her private accounts were frozen under civil asset forfeiture, while Trevor was working an entry-level inventory job in Dallas to pay off his court-ordered restitution.

General Vance looked out over the quiet horizon of the nation's capital.

"Your nomination review for the full four-star promotion was cleared by the Senate Armed Services Committee this morning, Kate," Vance smiled warmly, turning to face me. "Unanimous vote."

I touched the silver stars on my shoulders, feeling a deep, quiet warmth spread through my chest.

Twenty-six years ago, I had walked out of a multi-million-dollar mansion in Austin carrying a single duffel bag, choosing an ROTC uniform over a life of unearned luxury.

My father had told me I was throwing away a dynasty.

He had been wrong.

A true dynasty is not built on stock portfolios, offshore accounts, or heavy gold signet rings. It is built on honor, duty, and the willingness to stand in the dark so others can walk in the light.

I turned back toward the Pentagon flags fluttering proudly in the morning breeze, took a slow, peaceful drink of my coffee, and stepped forward into the future I had earned with my own hands.
