Chapter 20 - The Unbroken Dynasty

Six months later. October in Washington, D.C.

The early morning sun rose over the Potomac River, bathing the Pentagon, the Lincoln Memorial, and the quiet granite plazas of Arlington in a brilliant, unbroken gold.

I stood on the high balcony of the Defense Intelligence Agency headquarters, wrapped in the cool morning breeze, holding a warm cup of coffee.

The city below was quiet, peaceful, and awake.

General Mark Vance stepped out onto the balcony, holding two official briefing folders. He set them on the outdoor table, leaned against the stone balustrade, and looked out over the sparkling river.

"Quiet morning, Kate," Vance smiled, taking a slow sip of his own coffee.

"The quietest kind, Mark," I replied smoothly, looking out at the American flag fluttering proudly atop the Pentagon flagpole.

Two years had passed since that chaotic afternoon at the White House East Gate.

Arthur Mercer was serving his sentence in a federal penitentiary in Colorado, his fake corporate empire completely dismantled, his memory forgotten by the high-society peers he had spent millions trying to impress. Trevor was building a small, honest life in Dallas, earning his living through genuine labor.

And here, atop the highest command structure of the nation's intelligence apparatus, I stood at the pinnacle of military service—not because I had inherited an estate, but because I had chosen to serve.

Twenty-eight years ago, my father had shoved me aside, called me a "mall cop," and told me I had thrown away a dynasty.

He had been utterly, catastrophically wrong.

I looked down at the four gleaming silver stars resting securely on my shoulders, then out at the endless horizon of the nation I had sworn to defend.

I hadn't thrown away a dynasty.

I had built one.

May you like

A dynasty of honor. A dynasty of duty. A dynasty that would stand unbroken, unbowed, and unbought, forever.

I picked up my teacup, lifted it toward the rising sun, took a slow, peaceful sip, and stepped forward to lead the nation into the future.
