Chapter 8 - The Legal Reality Check

Diane looked like she had been physically struck across the face. Her manicured hands gripped the edge of the table so tightly her knuckles turned bone-white.

“You lying, manipulative little parasite!” Diane shrieked, leaping to her feet and lunging toward me across the table before Marcus grabbed her arm to hold her back. “You forged this! You manipulated an old man on his deathbed! I’ll have you thrown in military prison! I’ll have you stripped of your commission!”

“Go ahead and try, Diane,” I replied, my voice as steady as a monolith. “File a motion. Call the police. Bring in an independent forensic handwriting expert. Every single document in this folder has been authenticated, encrypted, and filed with Victor Vance’s office under permanent legal seal.”

Howard buried his face in his hands, groaning audibly. As a corporate defense attorney, he knew a checkmate when he saw one. He realized instantly that he had walked into a slaughterhouse representing a client who had lied to him about her legal standing.

“Mrs. Vance,” Howard muttered, standing up and grabbing his briefcase. “I strongly advise you to shut your mouth right now. If what is in this folder is legally sound—and knowing Victor Vance, it is airtight—you are currently sitting in a home you no longer own, financed by an estate you no longer control.”

“Howard, don't you dare walk out on us!” Diane screamed, her voice cracking hysterically. “We retain you! Fix this!”

“I cannot fix corporate fraud and illegal asset looting, madam,” Howard snapped back, snapping his briefcase shut with a sharp metal click. “Find yourself another lawyer. I’m resigning from representation effective immediately.”

Without another word, Howard turned on his heel and strode out of the dining room, his footsteps echoing rapidly down the marble foyer until the front door slammed shut behind him.

The room was left in absolute, smoking ruins.

Marcus stared at me with wide, panicked eyes, all his arrogance evaporating like morning mist. “Elena... look, let’s be reasonable. We’re family, right? Dad loved us all. If there’s a misunderstanding with the trust, we can share—we can restructure—!”

“Restructure what, Marcus?” I asked, stepping closer to the table. “Your four-million-dollar commercial loan default? The mounting construction liens? The fact that you planned to use my inheritance as collateral to bail out your failing real estate gambling?”

Marcus’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. He had no answer because every word was an unvarnished truth.
