Chapter 14 - An Unshakable Horizon

The winter solstice brought a heavy, blanketed layer of snow across the northern suburbs, turning the lake house into a quiet, picturesque winter sanctuary.
Victor Vance and I sat in Arthur’s old study by a roaring fireplace, reviewing the year-end financial summaries for the newly minted Vance-Hart Foundation. The numbers were strong, the legal standing was ironclad, and the transition center had achieved a one-hundred-percent employment placement rate for its first cohort of graduates.
Victor closed the leather-bound ledger, taking off his glasses to polish them with a silk cloth.
“You know, Captain,” Victor said, a warm smile touching his eyes. “For the first two years after Arthur passed away, I worried this entire estate would crumble into a bitter legal war that swallowed everyone whole.”
“So did I, Victor,” I admitted, looking out the frost-covered window toward the glowing lights of the veteran residence wing. “The difference is, Arthur built this estate on shifting sand by trying to appease people who only cared about the surface. We rebuilt it on bedrock.”
“And what’s next on the blueprint?” Victor asked, pouring two glasses of spiced cider.
“Expansion,” I said, raising my glass to toast. “We’re breaking ground on a second regional facility downtown next spring. More housing, more career training, more solid foundations for people who actually want to build something real.”
Victor clinked his glass against mine. “Arthur would be damn proud of you, Elena.”

“He doesn't have to be,” I smiled softly. “I built it myself.”
