Chapter 19 - Evening on the Veranda

That evening, the lake house was quiet again.

The sunset painted the water in bruised shades of violet, amber, and gold. I sat out on the teakwood veranda with a cup of chamomile tea, watching the moonlight ripple across the calm surface of the lake.

Lily—now sixteen and growing into an exceptionally sharp, creative young woman—walked out onto the porch carrying her architectural sketchbook. She pulled up a chair beside mine and rested her chin on her hands.

“Mom?” she asked softly.

“Yes, sweetie?”

“Do you ever miss the old days? Before all the legal stuff, before the estate fights?”

I looked down at my daughter, thinking of the cold hallways, the performative smiles, and the constant, crushing pressure of living under a roof built on sand.

“Never, Lily,” I answered honestly, putting my arm around her shoulders. “The old house was just a stage set. What we have now... this is real. This is ours.”

Lily smiled, flipping open her sketchbook to reveal a completed, beautifully shaded rendering of the community greenhouse she had designed months ago—a design that the foundation was now officially funding as part of the downtown park project.

“Good,” Lily said proudly. “Because I’m planning on designing every public library in the state before I turn twenty-five, and I need a strong family foundation to back me up.”

“You’ve already got the strongest foundation in the state,” I laughed, clinking my teacup gently against hers.
