Chapter 7 - The Opening Salvo

Howard Vance glanced down at the leather folder, chuckling softly as if amused by an amateur trying to play chess with a grandmaster.

“Oh, spare us the theatricals,” Howard dismissed, waving a hand lazily. “Whatever grievances you have about your childhood allowance can be settled in mediation later. Right now, we are executing a mandatory corporate restructuring—.”

“Open the folder, Howard,” I interrupted, my voice dropping into the cold, flat tone I used when giving orders under fire.

Howard stopped. He looked into my eyes, caught something chillingly unfamiliar in my gaze, and slowly reached out. He unlatched the brass clip and pulled out the top document.

It was Arthur’s amended primary trust instrument, complete with the red wax seal and notarized signatures.

Howard’s eyes scanned the first paragraph. Then the second.

The color drained from his face so fast it looked like a magic trick. His smug, condescending smile vanished, replaced by an expression of stark, unadulterated terror. He flipped frantically to the asset allocation schedule, his hands trembling violently against the paper.

“This... this isn't possible,” Howard whispered, his voice cracking.

Diane frowned, leaning forward across the table. “Howard? What on earth is he looking at? Just tell her to sign the loan guarantee!”

Howard didn't look at Diane. He slowly turned his head to stare at her, horror written in every line of his face.

“Mrs. Vance,” Howard said, his voice shaking. “Did you... did you know that Arthur executed a total restructuring of the primary trust four days before he died?”

Diane blinked, her confident facade faltering for a split second. “Of... of course he didn't. Arthur had mild cognitive fatigue at the end. Anything he signed then was invalid or influenced by—!”

“It was witnessed by two independent supreme court magistrates and certified by Victor Vance,” Howard interrupted sharply, his voice rising in panic. “And according to this instrument, Ms. Elena Vance-Hart is the sole managing trustee and seventy-eight percent majority owner of every single corporate asset, holding, and property bearing the Vance name—including this lake house.”

The dining room descended into a silence so profound you could hear the distant ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway.

Chloe dropped her phone. It hit the walnut table with a sharp clack.

Marcus pushed himself away from the wall, his face turning beet red. “What kind of sick joke is this? Dad would never cut us out! Elena is a nobody! She doesn't know the first thing about running a corporate empire!”

“Which is precisely why Arthur left it to me instead of you,” I said, standing up slowly from my chair.
