Chapter 7 - Shadows in the SyndicateWhile the east wing bloomed with light and warmth, the dark underbelly of the Moretti empire was undergoing a violent, merciless purge.

Down in the subterranean vaults beneath the main mansion, Alejandro Moretti sat in a high-backed leather chair, staring coldly at the man chained to a steel pillar across the concrete floor.

Ramos—once the untouchable head of security, now bruised, bleeding, and stripped of his tactical vest—stared up through swollen, terrified eyes at his master.

“I gave you everything, Alejandro,” Ramos choked out, spitting a drop of blood onto the gray floor. “Six years of loyalty. Viktor Sterling just... he got to my family. You know how ruthless he is.”

Alejandro didn't move. He swirled a finger lazily around the rim of an empty crystal glass, his expression as dead and flat as a winter lake.

“Loyalty isn't a lease, Ramos. It’s a mortgage,” Alejandro said softly, his baritone voice echoing off the damp concrete walls. “You don't get to default on payments just because a rival offers you a better interest rate.”

“Please... spare my brother,” Ramos begged, his voice breaking into a ragged sob as he slumped against the chains. “Kill me. Take everything I have. Just let my family go.”

Alejandro stood up slowly, towering over the broken traitor. He buttoned the front of his custom suit jacket with deliberate precision.

“Your brother has already been relocated to a secure facility in Montana under a new identity—courtesy of my cleanup crew,” Alejandro said quietly, watching Ramos’s eyes widen in stunned shock. “Sterling will look for him until the day he dies, and he will never find a trace.”

Ramos stared at him, bewildered. “Then... why am I still here?”

“Because,” Alejandro turned toward the iron-reinforced exit door, pausing just before the shadows swallowed him, “you tried to poison my wine, and you threatened a four-year-old child inside my home. My debts are always paid in full—both the good and the bad.”

He stepped out into the corridor, leaving Ramos to the dark silence of the vault.

Upstairs in his private study, Alejandro walked over to the mahogany desk and pressed the intercom button.

“Dante,” Alejandro commanded into the speaker.

“Yes, boss?” a sharp voice answered instantly.

“Double the perimeter guards around the east wing. Nobody gets within fifty feet of Elena and Emma without my direct, written authorization. Is that understood?”

“Consider it done, Mr. Moretti.”

Alejandro released the button. He looked down at the spot on the Persian rug where a four-year-old girl had knelt with a yellow-and-blue plastic tube, defying an armed guard just to drag him back from the edge of death. For the first time in ten years, a faint, ghost-like smile touched the corner of the mafia king’s mouth.
