Chapter 17 - The Weight of a PardonEven when an empire is left behind, echoes of the past sometimes demand a final accounting.

Two weeks later, Alejandro received formal notification from the federal prosecutor’s office downtown. The dismantling of Viktor Sterling’s syndicate—built entirely on the evidence recovered from Alejandro’s secure servers and the confessions forced in the underground vault—was officially complete. Sterling and his remaining co-conspirators had been indicted on federal racketeering, corruption, and attempted murder charges.
In a quiet corner of his private study, Alejandro sat behind his massive mahogany desk, reading through the final legal documents.
Dante stood near the doorway, holding a clipboard. “The federal judge signed off on the immunity deals for the coerced security personnel, boss. Ramos will serve five years in a federal penitentiary in Colorado, but his family’s relocation is secure, just as you promised.”
Alejandro lowered the document, his dark eyes steady and unreadable.
“Good,” Alejandro said quietly, closing the file folder with a soft, decisive thud. “Make sure the paperwork is filed. I want every single tie to the old operations severed permanently by the end of the month.”
“Consider it done, Mr. Moretti,” Dante nodded, hesitating for a second before offering a rare, faint smile. “And... congratulations on the new life, sir.”

Alejandro looked up, a ghost of a smile touching his lips. “Thank you, Dante. Close the door on your way out.”
When Dante left, Alejandro walked over to the bookshelf, reached between two leather-bound volumes, and clicked the toggle switch. The hidden security camera monitor flickered to life for a split second, showing the empty, pristine study—and then Alejandro switched it off for good. He didn't need cameras anymore. He didn't need surveillance or paranoia. Trust had finally replaced fear.
