Chapter 5 - The Debt of a KingThe heavy silence in the study lingered like smoke after a gunshot.

Alejandro Moretti stood motionless beside his desk, his towering frame silhouetted against the glowing projection screen, which still paused on the frozen, damning image of Ramos slipping away into the shadows.

He slowly turned his gaze toward my mother.

Mama shrank back instinctively, pulling me closer against her chest. In the underworld of the Moretti syndicate, ordinary people who saw too much, who stumbled upon secrets meant for graves, rarely survived the night. We were invisible basement staff, ghosts permitted to exist only at the absolute margins of their luxurious world. Now, we had witnessed a high-level assassination attempt, exposed a traitor, and saved the Don’s life with a child’s medical supply.

To people like Alejandro Moretti, witnesses were loose ends.

"Sir," Mama whispered, her voice trembling so badly the words barely formed. She dipped into a deep, shaking curtsy, keeping her eyes pinned to the floor. "Please. We saw nothing. We heard nothing. You can lock us in the basement. You can burn our things. Just... let us walk out the gates tomorrow morning. We’ll leave the city. We won't ever come back. I swear on my life."

Alejandro didn't answer right away. He walked slowly toward us, his polished shoes clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. Each step felt like the approach of an executioner.

He stopped just a foot away from my mother.

He didn't look at Mama. Instead, he slowly lowered his height, crouching down until he was eye-level with me once again.

I clutched Barnaby the rabbit tighter, staring up into Alejandro’s dark, fathomless eyes. There was no warmth in them—only the cold, calculating weight of absolute power. But beneath that terrifying surface, something else flickered. Something like respect. Or perhaps, a profound, chilling realization of debt.

"Elena," Alejandro said, his voice smooth and low. "Look at me."

Mama slowly raised her eyes, her face pale as paper, waiting for the sentence to be passed.

"If your daughter had not disobeyed your orders," Alejandro said deliberately, "if she had stayed cowering in that basement like a frightened animal... I would be dead on this floor right now. Ramos would have reported a fatal heart attack, Sterling’s men would have seized the shipping ports by midnight, and everything I built would have burned to ash."

He reached out. His large, calloused hand—the hand that held the lives of thousands—gently touched the strap of my pink rabbit backpack.

"She broke a rule," Alejandro continued, his gaze shifting back to me. "She disobeyed a direct command. She put herself in the middle of a war zone. And in my world, insubordination is punished with blood."

Mama let out a sharp, choked sob, falling to her knees on the rug, shielding me with her own body. "Please! Take me! Take everything we have! Spare her!"

"Mama, stop!" I cried out, wrapping my arms around her neck.

Alejandro looked down at my mother kneeling before him. A strange, unreadable expression crossed his hardened features—a ghost of some ancient memory, a reminder that even monsters have things they lost in the dark.

He slowly stood up to his full height.

"Get up, Elena," Alejandro commanded, his voice carrying that absolute, unarguable weight of command.

Mama hesitated, then slowly rose to her feet, her hands shaking as she clutched me against her.

"Effective immediately," Alejandro said, walking back toward his desk and picking up a gold fountain pen, "your employment in the basement staff quarters is terminated."

The world seemed to stop spinning. My heart plummeted straight into my stomach. We’re fired, I thought, hot tears spilling over my cheeks. We’re going out onto the street.

"Sir... please," Mama whispered, a single tear cutting a clean path through the dust on her cheek.

"You are no longer a maid, Elena," Alejandro interrupted, his voice cutting through her plea like a laser. He pulled a pristine sheet of heavy parchment stationery from a leather folder on his desk, scribbled a swift, sweeping signature across the bottom with his fountain pen, and pressed a heavy gold seal into the wax.

He walked back over and handed the paper directly to my mother.

Mama looked down at the document, her eyes scanning the lines of text. As she read, her color drained even further, but this time from sheer, stunned disbelief.

"This..." Mama gasped, her fingers trembling so hard the paper fluttered. "Mr. Moretti, this is the deed... the deed to the east wing estate manager’s quarters. And... and a permanent corporate trust fund for Emma’s medical care and education..."

"A Moretti always pays his debts," Alejandro said coldly, turning his back to look out the grand arched window toward the dark, sprawling expanse of his guarded estate. "You saved my life through her hands. From this moment on, you and your daughter are under the direct protection of the Moretti bloodline. Anyone who touches you, crosses you, or looks at you sideways answers to me."

May you like

He turned back around, his dark eyes locking onto mine one last time before giving a faint, almost imperceptible nod.

"Welcome to the family, Emma," Alejandro Moretti said softly. "You can leave the basement now."
