Chapter 10 - The Gathering StormBy July, the fragile peace of the Moretti estate was tested by forces gathering beyond the iron gates.

Viktor Sterling, the ruthless syndicate boss who had tried to buy off Ramos and seize the Houston shipping lanes, was not a man to accept defeat quietly. Stripped of his inside man and humiliated by the failed assassination attempt, Sterling began a quiet, aggressive campaign of economic and territorial warfare against the Moretti empire.

It started with intercepted cargo shipments on the Gulf Coast. Then came anonymous threats sent to the estate's administrative offices.

On a stormy Friday night, thunder cracked violently across the Texas sky, shaking the windowpanes of the east wing. Lightning flashed in jagged white streaks, casting wild shadows across our living room walls.

Mama and I were sitting on the sofa playing a quiet game of cards when the security phone on the wall began to buzz with a shrill, rhythmic emergency tone.

Mama froze, her cards slipping from her fingers. She stood up instantly, walking over to the wall unit and pressing the speaker button.

“Dante?” Mama’s voice shook slightly. “What’s happening?”

“Elena,” Dante’s voice crackled through the static, sounding hurried and tense. “Don't leave the east wing. Lock all the interior doors. Sterling’s men have breached the outer perimeter near the northern service road. Mr. Moretti is currently in the courtyard handling it.”

“In the storm?!” Mama gasped, her face draining of color. “Is he—is he safe?”

“The boss is safe,” Dante replied grimly. “But he wants absolute containment. Stay inside, Elena. Protect the girl.”

The line clicked dead.

Panic gripped my chest like a cold fist. I remembered the night of the birthday party, the sound of breaking glass, the terrifying silence that followed. I grabbed Barnaby and looked up at Mama with wide, terrified eyes.

“Are the bad men coming here, Mama?” I whispered, my voice trembling.

Mama knelt down, pulling me into her arms, trying desperately to keep her own fear hidden beneath a mask of brave reassurance. “No, sweetheart. Mr. Moretti won't let anyone touch us. He promised.”

Outside, on the wet, rain-slicked asphalt of the main courtyard, lightning illuminated a scene straight out of a nightmare.

Four sleek black SUVs had smashed through the outer perimeter gates, their headlights cutting blinding swaths through the driving rain. Armed men in tactical gear poured out of the vehicles, raising submachine guns as they fanned out across the open ground.

But they hadn't caught the Moretti empire sleeping.

From the shadows of the colonnade, Alejandro Moretti walked out into the pouring rain without an umbrella, his dark trench coat flapping in the fierce wind. He wasn't alone. A dozen elite enforcers stepped out with him, their weapons locked and loaded with terrifying, synchronized precision.

“Viktor!” Alejandro’s voice cut through the thunder, deep, booming, and laced with absolute, unadulterated death.

From the lead SUV, a middle-aged man with sharp, rat-like features and an expensive wet suit stepped forward, holding a pistol. “You’re finished, Alejandro! Your empire is rotting from the inside out!”

Alejandro stopped fifty feet away. Rain slicked back his dark hair, water droplets dripping from his jawline, but his stance was as immovable as a mountain of granite.

“You sent a coward like Ramos to poison my wine,” Alejandro said coldly, his hand resting casually near the holster beneath his coat. “You sent mercenaries to test my gates in a thunderstorm. You mistake my silence for weakness, Viktor.”

“Let’s see how strong you are when I burn this entire estate to the ground!” Sterling snarled, raising his pistol.

Before Sterling’s finger could even twitch against the trigger, a sharp, deafening crack echoed through the storm.

Alejandro didn't flinch.

A bullet pierced the asphalt an inch from Sterling’s shoe, fired with pinpoint warning accuracy by one of the unseen sniper nests perched on the mansion roof.

“Drop your weapons,” Alejandro commanded, taking one slow, terrifying step forward. “Or the next bullet won't miss your skull.”

For three long, agonizing seconds, the storm raged around them, the wind screaming through the oak trees. Sterling looked at his men, then at Alejandro’s absolute, terrifying composure, and realized the terrible truth:

You cannot kill a king in his own fortress.

May you like

With a curse of pure rage, Sterling dropped his pistol into the mud, holding his hands up as Alejandro’s enforcers swarmed forward like a pack of wolves, tackling the intruders into the rain-soaked dirt.

Standing safely behind the armored glass of the east wing window, I watched the dark figure of Alejandro Moretti standing victorious amidst the storm, and I knew—without a single shadow of a doubt—that the monsters outside would never reach us again.
