Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the FootageThe high-definition footage on the massive projection screen brought the Moretti study back to life, replaying events from an hour earlier with terrifying, crystal-clear precision.

On the screen, the room was empty. The golden light of the late afternoon sun streamed through the arched windows, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. The mahogany desk sat pristine and untouched, save for the crystal wineglass half-filled with deep red vintage Merlot that Alejandro had poured before heading down to greet his guests.
"Fast-forward to twenty minutes ago," Alejandro commanded quietly.
The video sped up into a frantic blur of motion—sunlight shifting, shadows lengthening—until it slowed back down to real-time speed.
Click.
The timestamp in the corner of the screen read: 19:14:22.
The heavy double doors of the study didn't open. Instead, a slim, elegant hand reached in from the side frame, unlocking the private side-entrance that led directly down to the private family wing.
A figure stepped into the room.
Even in the grainy, high-contrast night-vision mode of the hidden camera, the silhouette was instantly recognizable. It wasn't a servant. It wasn't a random intruder from the streets.
It was a man wearing an immaculate, custom-tailored charcoal suit—the kind worn only by the inner circle of the Moretti syndicate.
In the real room, standing near the door, Ramos’s entire body went completely rigid. His breath hitched so loudly it echoed in the silent study.
On the screen, the man walked briskly over to Alejandro’s desk. He didn't look around; he moved with the practiced, arrogant ease of someone who belonged there, someone who knew every blind spot of the estate.
In his right hand, he held a small, dark glass dropper bottle.
With a swift, practiced flick of his wrist, the man uncapped the vial and squeezed three thick, colorless drops directly into the crystal wineglass of Merlot. He gave the glass a casual, circular swirl to mix the poison into the wine, recapped the dropper, slipped it back into his jacket pocket, and turned on his heel, vanishing back through the private side-door as silently as a ghost.
Timestamp: 19:15:05.
Less than forty-three seconds total.
In the real study, the air turned to ice.
Alejandro Moretti didn't move. He didn't shout. He stood behind his desk with his hands resting casually on the polished mahogany surface, watching the frozen image on the screen. The man on the video had his back turned for most of the clip, but as he turned to exit through the side door, the camera caught a clear, undeniable profile in the reflection of the window pane.
A sharp scar running down the back of the right hand. A distinct diamond-encrusted signet ring gleaming on the pinky finger.
Alejandro slowly turned his head. His dark, abyssal eyes locked onto Ramos.
Ramos was shaking. Fine, uncontrollable tremors wraced his massive frame. Sweat beaded profusely on his forehead, rolling down his scarred cheek and dripping onto the Persian rug.
"Ramos," Alejandro said, his voice dropping into a register so quiet, so dangerously calm, that it felt like the rumble of an earthquake before the fault line snaps. "Is there anything you’d like to tell me about your evening routine?"
"S-sir," Ramos stammered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak. He took a staggering step backward, his hands trembling as he reached instinctively toward the holster beneath his tactical vest. "I... I don't know what that footage is. It—it's edited. Someone hacked the system—"
CLACK.
Before Ramos’s fingers could even brush the leather of his holster, the heavy double doors of the study banged open behind him. Four heavily armed elite enforcers—men who answered only to Alejandro’s direct bloodline—poured into the room, their submachine guns raised and locked dead onto Ramos’s chest.
"Don't move," one of the enforcers barked.
Ramos froze, his hand hovering inches from his gun, his face the color of wet cement. He looked from the barrels of the guns to Alejandro’s terrifying, stone-cold stare.
"You think I wouldn't recognize my own head of security's ring?" Alejandro asked softly, stepping around the desk. He walked toward Ramos with the slow, terrifying grace of a panther closing in on a wounded deer. He stopped two feet away, looking down at the big guard with utter contempt. "You served me for six years, Ramos. I made you wealthy. I gave you power. And yet... you let Viktor Sterling’s syndicate buy you out for a seat at the table."
"Sir, please!" Ramos dropped heavily to his knees, his tough-guy facade shattering completely into pathetic whimpering. He pressed his palms together, bowing toward the floor. "Sterling... he threatened my family! He had my brother—he said if I didn't get you out of the way, they’d kill him! I had no choice!"
Alejandro didn't blink. He didn't show an ounce of sympathy, anger, or surprise. To him, betrayal was simply math—an equation he had solved a hundred times before.
"You always have a choice, Ramos," Alejandro said coldly. "You just chose the wrong side of the ledger."
He flicked two fingers toward the enforcers. "Take him to the lower vault. Strip his rank, strip his weapons, and leave him down there until I decide whether to feed him to the river or let Sterling collect what's left of him."
"No! Mr. Moretti, please! NO—!"
Ramos’s screams were cut short as two of the enforcers grabbed him by the tactical vest and collar, hauling him backward out of the study like a sack of garbage. The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them, plunging the room back into a heavy, suffocating silence.

Mama was still standing near the doorway, holding me so tightly my ribs hurt. Her eyes were wide with shock, staring at the spot where Ramos had just been dragged away.
Alejandro stood alone in the center of the room for a long moment, breathing slowly, staring down at the shattered wineglass on the floor. Then, very deliberately, he turned his head and looked directly at my mother.
