Chapter 6 - The Forensic Audit

The autumn wind off Lake Geneva whipped dark, white-capped ripples across the water, but inside my home office, the atmosphere was suffocatingly still.
At 9:00 AM on Monday morning, two forensic accountants from Daniel Brooks’s private investigative division sat across my wide oak desk, their laptops connected to my encrypted local network. Sitting beside them was Ethan, his eyes red-rimmed, holding a stack of corporate bank statements he had retrieved from his marketing firm’s financial files over the weekend.
“Margaret,” Senior Auditor Sarah Chen said, turning her laptop screen toward me. “The wire transfers from your late husband’s trust didn't start three months ago when Brittany moved into the guest wing. They started nine months ago.”
Ethan flinched, his coffee mug freezing inches from his mouth. “Nine months ago? But Brittany told me she was only handling my firm’s payroll accounts!”
Sarah pulled up a series of split-screen ledger entries.
“Nine months ago, Brittany established a secondary digital signature protocol on your mother’s private living trust through an online banking portal,” Sarah explained, tapping her pen against the screen. “She diverted small, recurring transfers—four thousand dollars here, six thousand dollars there—disguised as 'estate landscaping and roof maintenance' fees paid to an LLC called North Shore Property Management.”
“An LLC registered to Julian Reed,” I added smoothly, taking a slow sip of black tea.
“Precisely,” Sarah confirmed. “Over nine months, those 'minor maintenance' diversions totaled one hundred and eighty-four thousand dollars. When you refused to sign the General Power of Attorney three weeks ago, Brittany realized she couldn't execute a full property liquidation before the annual trust audit at the end of October. That’s when the frame job shifted from a luxury asset seizure to an emergency exit plan.”
Ethan buried his face in his hands, his broad shoulders shaking with deep, agonizing gasps. “She was stealing from Dad’s legacy while sitting at our dinner table... She was bleeding my mother dry while pretending to care about her health.”
I stood up, walked around the desk, and placed a firm, steady hand on my son’s shoulder.
“Listen to me, Ethan,” I said, my voice dropping into the authoritative register I had used for twenty-eight years in federal field offices. “Self-pity is a luxury we cannot afford today. The criminal prosecution against Brittany and Julian is being handled by the United States Attorney. Our job is to ensure that every single stolen dollar is accounted for, clawed back, and placed back into Arthur’s trust.”
Sarah Chen pulled up a secondary document on her screen.
“We’ve already initiated civil asset freeze petitions under Section 1964 of the RICO Act,” Sarah said, a razor-sharp smile touching her lips. “The U.S. District Court issued a temporary restraining order an hour ago. Julian Reed’s private Naperville residence, his luxury vehicles, and two secondary offshore accounts in the Bahamas have been officially frozen by federal marshals.”
Ethan looked up, wiping his eyes, his posture slowly straightening as the cold reality of the situation replaced his shock. “What do we do now, Mom?”

“Now,” I said, looking out the window at the storm clouds gathering over the lake, “we prepare for the civil asset forfeiture hearing on Thursday.”
