Chapter 13 - The Sting at Michigan Avenue

At 2:00 PM on Friday afternoon, the high-rise conference room on the forty-fifth floor of a prestigious Michigan Avenue office building was filled with light, luxury, and tension.
Sitting at the far end of the long glass table was Victor Vance—a sixty-year-old man in a tailored grey suit, his silver hair slicked back, a smug, arrogant smile resting on his thin lips. Flanking him were two high-priced corporate attorneys representing Apex Capital Management.
Across the table sat Ethan and Frank Callahan, my estate attorney.
I sat at the head of the table, wearing a dark navy wool suit, my arms folded comfortably over my lap.
“Mrs. Wilson,” Victor Vance began, his tone dripping with patronizing warmth as he reviewed the development rights contract. “I must say, I admire your resilience. After the terrible ordeal you suffered with your former daughter-in-law, most women your age would have retreated into quiet retirement. Yet here you are, selling your property's development rights to liquidate your capital.”
“I’m a practical woman, Mr. Vance,” I replied smoothly. “I believe in resolving open liabilities before they become a burden.”
Victor Vance smiled, picking up a gold fountain pen. “Apex Capital is prepared to wire two million dollars directly into your primary escrow account today to acquire the exclusive development option.”
He signed his name on the designated line with a flourish of dark ink.
The moment his pen lifted from the paper, the double glass doors of the conference room swung open.
Daniel Brooks stepped into the room, accompanied by two special agents from the FBI Financial Crimes Division and an Assistant United States Attorney.
Victor Vance’s smile froze instantly. His eyes darted toward Daniel, a sudden flash of recognition and blind panic striking his face.
“Victor Vance,” Agent Miller announced, pulling a federal arrest warrant from his jacket pocket. “You are under arrest for Federal Wire Fraud Conspiracy, Money Laundering, and Extortion under Title 18 of the United States Code.”
Victor Vance’s lead attorney stood up frantically. “This is a private commercial transaction! My client has done nothing illegal!”
“Your client just executed a two-million-dollar wire transfer using funds derived directly from the offshore accounts frozen during Brittany Wilson and Julian Reed’s criminal indictment,” AUSA Helen Vance stated, stepping forward with a laptop displaying the real-time financial trace. “We have tracked the capital directly back to your 2019 hedge fund embezzlement scheme.”
Victor Vance sank back into his leather chair, the color completely draining from his face as he looked at me.
“You...” Victor whispered, his voice trembling with bitter, helpless rage. “You set this up...”
I stood up slowly, smoothed down my suit jacket, and looked him dead in the eye.
“Seven years ago, I put you in prison for stealing from honest retirees, Victor,” I said softly, every word razor-sharp. “Did you really think I wouldn't recognize your handiwork when you came after my family?”

The two federal agents pulled Victor Vance out of his chair, spun him around, and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists, marching him out of the glass conference room as his attorneys scrambled after him in silence.
