Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Home

May arrived at Lake Geneva with a breathtaking explosion of pink hydrangeas, lush green lawns, and warm, gentle lake breezes.

On a glorious Sunday afternoon, Ethan and Daniel Brooks helped me set up a long wooden dining table on the back stone patio overlooking the water.

Dozens of white lily flower arrangements sat along the table, gleaming under the bright afternoon sun.

My sister, Clara—who had fully recovered from her surgery in Denver—sat in a comfortable wicker chair near the garden, laughing as she spoke with Daniel about her garden in Colorado.

I stood by the edge of the stone seawall, wearing an elegant cream silk blouse, holding a fresh cup of Earl Grey tea, watching the calm blue water reflect the vast sky above.

Ethan walked up beside me, handing me a small, wrapped box.

“What’s this, Ethan?” I asked, looking up at him with a smile.

“Open it,” he said gently.

I unribboned the box and lifted the lid. Inside sat a pristine, handcrafted silver desk clock, engraved with simple, bold lettering across the base:

TO MARGARET WILSON — GUARDIAN OF THE HOME, MASTER OF THE TRUTH.

I ran my thumb over the polished silver, feeling a warm, deep knot form in my throat.

“Thank you, my son,” I whispered, pulling him into a warm, fierce embrace.

“Thank you for holding the line for us, Mom,” Ethan murmured back.

I turned back toward the sparkling lake, taking a slow, peaceful breath of the fresh spring air.

The traps had been destroyed. The vipers had been caged. The house was safe, the family was whole, and the horizon was wide open.

I raised my tea glass toward the endless blue sky, took a peaceful drink in the golden sunlight, and smiled into the beautiful, quiet future I had defended with my own hands.
