Chapter 14 - The Final Audit

Three weeks later.

The spring rain had passed, leaving the shoreline of Lake Geneva bathed in brilliant, warm sunlight.

Ethan and I sat in the conference room of First National Bank in downtown Geneva alongside Frank Callahan and a senior federal court monitor.

On the table rested the final liquidation decree for Apex Capital Management.

“Margaret, Ethan,” Frank said, sliding a certified bank draft across the table. “Under the federal civil forfeiture ruling, Victor Vance’s shell companies have been completely dismantled. The court has awarded your estate a full restitution payment of three hundred and fifty thousand dollars to cover all legal, forensic, and administrative costs incurred during the last year.”

Ethan picked up the bank draft, a quiet, profound smile spreading across his face as he handed it to me.

“It’s over, Mom,” Ethan whispered. “Every single thread they pulled... every lie they tried to spin... it’s completely gone.”

I looked at the bank draft, then folded it neatly and placed it inside my leather handbag.

“It was never just about the money, Ethan,” I said softly, looking at my son. “It was about teaching the people who target us that integrity is an immovable wall.”

Over the past month, Ethan’s agency had secured two major municipal contracts, regaining its financial independence entirely without external loans. He had hired a new, honest Chief Financial Officer and established a strict, transparent governance structure for his business.
