Chapter 11 - The Shadow of the Past

The spring after Brittany’s conviction brought an unnatural, uneasy calm to Lake Geneva.

While the court cases had concluded and the stolen funds had been restored, a ghost from my professional past was quietly stirring in the shadows.

It began on a rainy Tuesday morning in late April. I was sorting through my physical mail at the granite kitchen counter when I opened a plain white envelope bearing no return address. Inside was a single printed sheet of heavy paper containing a three-line message:

“You spent twenty-eight years putting men like Julian Reed behind bars, Margaret. But Julian was never the master of that board. Check the offshore escrow accounts under Project Apex before Ethan’s firm takes its next loan.”

My fingers tightened around the paper. The phrasing carried the clinical precision of an insider.

I picked up my smartphone and called Daniel Brooks immediately.

Ten minutes later, Daniel arrived at my house carrying a encrypted federal terminal. We sat together in my study, the autumn rain drumming steadily against the bay windows.

“I ran the trace on Project Apex through the Bureau's financial crimes database,” Daniel said, his brow furrowing as the screen illuminated his face. “It’s a secondary offshore shell entity registered in the Cayman Islands three years ago. But look at the original board of directors.”

He turned the laptop screen toward me.

Sitting at the top of the corporate registry was a name I recognized instantly: Victor Vance.

A sharp, cold memory flooded my mind.

Victor Vance was a former senior partner at a Chicago hedge fund whom I had personally investigated and indicted seven years before my retirement for a seventy-million-dollar pension fraud scheme. Vance had served five years in federal prison before his early release on medical parole fourteen months ago.

“Victor Vance was Julian Reed’s uncle,” Daniel explained, his voice grim. “When Brittany approached Julian to help frame you, Julian didn't just come up with the drug plot on his own. Victor Vance was guiding him from behind the scenes, using Brittany’s greed to execute a quiet corporate takeover of your estate and Ethan’s firm as personal revenge against you.”

I looked at the printed note sitting on my desk, feeling a familiar, cold fire ignite deep in my chest.

Victor Vance had believed that after my retirement, I was a defenseless widow living isolated on a lake. He had tried to use my daughter-in-law as a weapon to destroy my family from within.

“He thought he could use my family to get to me, Daniel,” I said softly, my voice dropping into an authoritative register. “He forgot that retired agents don't forget how to hunt.”
