Chapter 10 - The Master’s Horizon

Spring arrived at Lake Geneva with a breathtaking explosion of green oak leaves, blooming pink hydrangeas, and warm, brilliant sunshine that sparkled across the crystal-clear water.
On a sunlit Saturday afternoon in May, over forty friends, neighbors, and former federal colleagues gathered on the wide back lawn of my craftsman estate for the annual summer solstice gathering.
A long table covered in white linen sat on the stone patio, laden with fresh summer salads, grilled salmon, and chilled wine glasses.
Daniel Brooks stood near the grill with Ethan, both of them laughing as they discussed the boat dock renovations Ethan had completed earlier that morning.
I stood near the edge of the stone seawall, wearing an elegant ivory linen dress, holding a glass of iced tea, watching the white sailboats glide peacefully across the blue bay.
Daniel walked up beside me, handing me a fresh napkin.
“A penny for your thoughts, Special Agent Wilson,” Daniel smiled warmly, leaning his elbow against the stone wall.
I looked out over the quiet water, at my son’s genuine laugh echoing from the patio, at the sturdy craftsman house that my late husband and I had built with twenty-eight years of honest work and devotion.
“I was just thinking about foundations, Daniel,” I smiled, taking a sip of my cold tea.
“And what about them?”
“When you build a life on truth, integrity, and patience,” I declared, my voice carrying the quiet, unshakeable strength of a woman who had faced the dark and emerged victorious, “no trap, no lie, and no viper on earth can ever take your horizon away.”
Daniel raised his glass toward the sparkling lake, clinking it gently against mine.
“To the horizon, Margaret,” he said.
I smiled into the warm spring breeze, took a slow, peaceful drink in the golden sunlight, and stepped forward into the long, beautiful future I had defended with my own hands.

The trap was shattered. The ledger was balanced. The house was secure.
And the horizon belonged, forever, to me.
