Chapter 9 - THE ONE I TRUSTED MOST

We hid until the police search died down.
I carried Sophie deep into the woods, off any trail, huddled beneath fallen branches while flashlights swept the undergrowth and voices called my name. They were hunting me. The system Vanessa had bought was hunting the victim.
Sophie did not speak until the moon rose high. Then she whispered into my shoulder, “Daddy… they hurt you. Why do they hate us so much?”
I stroked her hair, my heart aching so deeply I could barely breathe. “They do not hate us, sweetheart. They hate what they cannot have. And they made a terrible choice to take it. But I will not let them win. No matter what.”
I thought of Elena.
She had helped me find the diary. She had sent the anonymous copy. She had given me the address. If there was a fourth conspirator—someone close, someone trusted—could it be her? The thought made me sick. She was Claire’s sister. My sister-in-law. She loved Sophie. She had grieved with me.
And yet… had she been the one to leave the attic door unlocked? To whisper to Vanessa when I stepped out of the room? To ensure the police arrived exactly when they did?
I pulled out my phone—still working, barely one bar—and messaged her from a temporary number.
*Are you safe? Police came to the house. Did they take you?*
She replied within seconds.
**I am hiding. They are watching everywhere. Adrian—they knew exactly where you were. Exactly when you would be there. Someone told them. Who else knew the address? Who else knew your plans?**
My blood ran cold. Only Elena. Only she knew everything. Unless she was testing me. Unless she wanted to see if I would say something that confirmed her guilt.
I typed carefully.
*Only you. And me.*
The reply came instantly.
**Then they are watching me too. Do not come back to town. Do not trust anyone. Not even me. Vanessa has reach everywhere. And remember—Claire had a secret brother no one spoke of. Disinherited. Angry. He swore revenge. Look for him. He may hold the final piece.**
Claire had a brother? She had never mentioned him.
I typed again.
*What is his name? Where is he?*
No reply came. Only a single line that appeared a moment later.
**HE IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK. AND HE IS NOT WHO YOU BELIEVE.**
Then the phone died.
I sat in darkness, Sophie asleep against my chest, every word turning slowly in my mind. A brother. Disinherited. Angry. Revenge. Vanessa’s fourth accomplice. Could he be the one who had helped them plan everything? Who had money and influence I did not know about? Who had been pulling strings all along?
I thought back over everything. The favoritism in the family. The way Claire had never spoken of certain relatives. The fear in her diary. Someone close. Someone I trust.
And then it hit me.
The handwriting in the diary matched. The concern that felt just slightly too intense. The way she had been there at every critical moment, pushing me forward, handing me exactly what I needed to find—and then getting Vanessa warned just in time.
Elena was not just Claire’s sister. She was the disinherited sibling. The one who had watched their parents give everything to Claire. Who had grown bitter and resentful while Claire had everything—love, marriage, a beautiful child, a wonderful home. Elena had wanted Claire’s inheritance. Her status. Her husband. Her daughter.
She had joined forces with Vanessa years ago. Together they had plotted Claire’s death. Elena would help Vanessa take me, and Vanessa would help Elena take control of the estate. And Sophie—Sophie was the final obstacle. The living reminder of everything Elena hated.
I held my sleeping daughter tighter.
I had walked into every trap Elena set. I had trusted the woman who helped murder my wife. Who had stood by while Claire wasted away. Who handed me clues designed to lead me exactly where she wanted me to go.

And now Elena knew I suspected.
There would be no more help coming from her. There would be only betrayal.
