Chapter 5 - THE SECRET CLAIRE TOOK TO HER GRAVE

For the next three days, I walked through the house like a ghost. Every corner held Sophie’s laughter, her toys, her scent—and the awful silence where she no longer was. Elena stayed with me, helping me gather evidence, making calls, finding lawyers. We fought every hour. But the system moved slowly, and Vanessa had been thorough.

On the fourth day, I returned to the attic. If Vanessa had taken the note, there might be something else she had missed. Something she did not know existed.

I found it tucked inside the back cover of Claire’s high school yearbook—a small, leather-bound diary. Claire had never mentioned it. The pages were brittle, the ink faded. The earliest entries were ordinary—school, friends, dreams. Then the tone changed.

*I met him today. Adrian. He is everything I ever wanted. Kind, steady, strong. But when I told Vanessa, she went pale. She said, “Why him? He was supposed to be mine.” I laughed it off. I should not have.*

The entries grew darker.

*Vanessa watches us. She finds ways to be wherever we are. She tells people they were together first. That Adrian chose the wrong sister. That is not true! He never even looked at her. But she tells the lie so often people begin to believe it. I am afraid to leave them alone in a room together. Ever.*

Then came an entry dated shortly before their wedding.

*Vanessa threatened me today. She said, “I will wait. A lifetime if I must. One day you will be gone. And then I will step into your shoes. He will never know. And the child—she will be mine to raise.” I told Adrian. He laughed. He said she was bitter, that she would move on. But I know her. She means it. I can feel it. And if anything ever happens to me… promise me, whoever finds this… do not let her win. Do not let her take my place. Protect my husband. Protect my daughter.*

I closed the diary and pressed it to my chest, tears spilling over. Claire had known. She had feared exactly what happened. She had tried to warn me—and I had not listened. I had dismissed it as old rivalry. I had trusted the wrong person.

But there was one final entry, dated three days before Claire died. Written in a shaking, hurried hand.

*There is something I have not told him. Something too terrible to speak aloud. Vanessa did not just wait. She acted. That illness… it came on so fast. The doctors cannot explain why she declined so quickly. Vanessa was there every day. Helping. Bringing food. Giving medicine. I cannot prove it. But I know in my heart. She hurried me to the grave. And if I do not survive… be very careful. She will strike again. And she will have help. Someone close. Someone Adrian trusts. Watch for the small things. Watch the medicine. Watch the food. And remember—Vanessa did not do this alone.*

My hands fell away.

Vanessa had not merely hoped Claire would die. She may have killed her.

And she had an accomplice. Someone close. Someone I trusted.

I stood up, every nerve ending screaming. I reached for my phone to call Elena. But before I could dial, a car pulled up outside. A familiar figure stepped out. My oldest friend. The man who had been best man at our wedding. Who had brought me meals after the funeral. Who had encouraged me to give Vanessa a chance.

Mark.

He walked to the door, knocked, and stepped inside as if he belonged.

And as he crossed the threshold, I remembered what Claire had written in her final line—*someone close. Someone Adrian trusts.*

Mark looked at me, his expression grave. But his eyes… his eyes held no surprise. Only a quiet, knowing certainty.

“Adrian,” he said. “I came to tell you to stop digging. Some things are better left buried. With the dead.”
