Chapter 15 - WHAT THEY TOOK FROM ME

We reached the edge of town hours later, exhausted, bleeding from cuts, shivering in the cold. I carried Sophie the final mile, her head resting on my shoulder, asleep from pure exhaustion.

I walked straight to the home of Arthur Halloway—the lawyer Claire had named in her letter. He opened the door in his dressing gown, looked at us, and stepped aside without a single question.

“Come in,” he said quietly. “Warm yourselves. I will call the police.”

I placed the voice recorder and the duplicate documents on his desk. “Proof. Every confession. Every name.”

He examined everything carefully, his expression growing grimmer with each page, each audio clip. When he finished, he looked at me with deep sorrow.

“Solid evidence. Damning. But Adrian—they know you have it. They know they face life in prison. Desperate people do desperate things. We must move quickly.”

But we were too late.

The first call came minutes later. From a restricted number. I answered on speakerphone while Halloway listened.

Vanessa’s voice—calm, terrifyingly composed.

“You won the documents, Adrian. You won the recordings. Congratulations. But you forgot one thing.”

My blood turned cold. “Where is she?”

“Elena left an hour ago. Before Mark broke. Before you ran. She took what matters most.”

I gripped the edge of the desk. “Sophie is right here. You failed.”

A pause. Then Vanessa laughed—a low, dreadful sound.

“Is she? Look at her, Adrian. Really look.”

I spun around. The little girl sleeping on the sofa—face half-buried, hood pulled up, shivering beneath a blanket. I had assumed it was Sophie. I had carried her blindly. I had never checked her face properly in the darkness.

I stepped forward and pulled the hood back.

It was not Sophie.

A neighbor’s child. A friend from the next farm. Someone roughly the same age, same build, whom Elena had paid and drugged to leave the cabin with me in the chaos.

The room tilted.

“Where is my daughter!” I roared into the phone.

“Safe,” Vanessa said. “For now. If you file those charges. If you play that recording. If you speak a single word to anyone—Sophie dies. Quietly. Cleanly. And we leave. You will never find her. Never know where she rests. And你 will spend the rest of your life wondering exactly what you chose.”

Elena spoke next, her voice ice-cold and triumphant.

“Burn everything, Adrian. Delete the recording. Burn the documents. Sign what we send you. Walk away. And we return Sophie unharmed. Refuse… and you bury a second Bennett woman. Choose carefully. You already lost one wife. Do not lose your child too.”

The line went dead.

I stood there, trembling from head to toe, empty hands clutching nothing at all. They had swapped her. They had used my own desperation and exhaustion against me. They had taken the one thing I would trade every truth, every victory, every breath to save.

Arthur Halloway placed a hand on my shoulder. “Adrian—we can trace the call. We can mobilize units. We can—”

“No,” I whispered. “If we move… they kill her. If we wait… they vanish. There is no winning.”

I looked at the voice recorder on his desk. At the duplicate documents Claire had risked everything to preserve. Justice for her… or life for Sophie.

Elena had given me the same choice twice. And this time—she had made certain I would break.

I sank into the chair and buried my face in my hands. Everything Claire suffered. Every threat she endured. Every secret she kept. Every word on that recording—all of it meant nothing if Sophie was not alive to see justice done.

But if I surrendered… Elena walked free. Vanessa walked free. They would control everything. And Sophie would grow up surrounded by the very people who murdered her mother. Who would lie to her every day. Who would silence her eventually, just as they silenced Claire.

There was no right answer. Only two roads leading to ruin. And somewhere between them—my daughter, waiting to see what her father would choose.
