Chapter 8 - WHAT I FOUND IN THE WOODS

I drove with the headlights off once I turned onto that road.

The house stood alone in a clearing, shadowed by tall pines, far enough from any main road that no one would hear a scream. A single dim light burned on the ground floor. Julian’s car sat beneath a tarp near the shed. Vanessa’s sedan was parked close to the porch.

My heart hammered against my ribs, painful and fast.

I circled through the trees, keeping to deep shadow, until I reached the rear of the house. The kitchen window stood partially open. Voices drifted out.

Vanessa. Sharp and angry.

“—should never have brought her here. Someone will notice.”

Mark’s voice, low and tense. “She asked too many questions. She saw Julian. She began screaming about ‘the man who walks funny.’ We cannot risk her talking. Not to anyone.”

Vanessa hesitated. Then her voice dropped to a whisper that carried like a blade.

“Then we finish it. Tonight. Make it look like an accident. Fire. Carbon monoxide. Anything. And then we are finally free. No loose ends.”

I gripped the windowsill until my knuckles turned white. They were going to kill my daughter. Tonight. To protect themselves.

I heard Sophie then. Small, trembling, from somewhere deeper inside.

“Where is my daddy? Why won’t you let me call him?”

“Be quiet,” Julian snapped. “You get nothing until you learn to do as you are told.”

I heard a sharp cry. A blow.

Something in me snapped.

I did not think. I kicked the kitchen door from its hinges and burst into the room. All three turned toward me—Vanessa pale with shock, Mark reaching for something at his waist, Julian stepping in front of a closed interior door.

“Daddy!” Sophie screamed from behind it.

I pointed the small digital recorder I had switched on the moment I burst in.

“Every word. Every threat. Confession to murder. It is all recording. And it is backed up everywhere. Touch her—and every single word goes straight to the police. To the press. To every authority in this state. Do not move.”

Vanessa’s face twisted. “You are bluffing.”

“Am I? Try me. You killed my wife. You poisoned her slowly. Mark helped. Julian helped. And now you plan to murder a child to cover it all up. Three lives destroyed so you could play house. Is it worth prison for the rest of your lives?”

Mark took a step forward. “Break it. Take it from him.”

“I will smash it,” I said, raising it high, “and then upload everything manually. Every file. Every recording. Every page of Claire’s diary. Do not test me.”

Vanessa hesitated. She saw the certainty in my face. She knew I had nothing left to lose.

“Let her go,” I said. “Walk out that door. Disappear. And I will think about whether to press all the charges. Keep her here—and we all burn together.”

Vanessa looked at Mark. At Julian. She was calculating. Searching for an angle.

Then she smiled. A terrible, broken smile.

“You think you won. But you are forgetting something. We did not act alone. There is a fourth. Someone even Claire never guessed. And they are already where you least expect them.”

Before I could ask what she meant, sirens wailed in the distance. Coming fast.

Vanessa’s eyes gleamed. “Called them ourselves. Reported an intruder. Armed and dangerous. By the time they break down your door, Adrian—you will be the one in handcuffs. And we will tell them how grief finally broke you. How you came to kidnap your own daughter. And who will believe you then?”

Blue lights flooded the windows.

I stood trapped between three conspirators and the law arriving with lies already prepared. I had the truth—but I had seconds to act.

I threw the recorder hard against the floorboards. It shattered. They all flinched.

In that split second, I lunged past Julian, threw open the door, and found Sophie huddled on the floor, tied and terrified. I slashed the ropes with a pocketknife, swept her into my arms, and crashed through the back door into the woods just as the front door burst open.

Shouts. Commands. Vanessa screaming about danger. Footsteps behind us.

I ran. Sophie pressed tight against my chest, burying her face. Branches whipped at us. Darkness swallowed the path. I did not know where I was going. I only knew I had to keep moving. To keep her alive.

May you like

But as I ran, Vanessa’s final words echoed in my mind. There is a fourth. Someone even Claire never guessed.

And I realized with sudden, sickening clarity—whoever that fourth person was—they had access to everything. My house. My files. My plans. And they had been standing beside me the entire time.
